Our newest member of the photography team, Jackson Megar, has spent the summer scouting up-and-coming artists and capturing their performances at venues all over the city of Boston. When he first told me about Saleka, and I played a few of her records, it made perfect sense that she was on tour with the soulfully gifted R&B singer, Giveon. I had the pleasure of speaking with Saleka, ahead of back to back performances at the House of Blues in Boston. 

As much of her music comes from soundtracks including, "Remain" from the motion picture Old (2021), and "The Sky Cries" from  Servant: Songs from the Attic (2021), it was intriguing to hear her creative process when it comes to writing these records. For some songs she would only have the script and along with a conversation from the director, was tasked with sculpting a vibe to bring the entire scene to a climax. It seems to come naturally to Saleka, as she's spent her entire life being influenced by the work of her father, legendary director M. Night Shyamalan. 

The visuals that Saleka has released are nothing short of superb. One video in particular that caught my attention was "Mr. Incredible" which was shot in 2020, and directed by Saleka's younger sister Ishana. The two have collaborated on several other videos to date, and their chemistry & shared influences is easy to see.

Today, we’re honing in on Brockton native, Benjy Ali, who’s brand new single “Alright” has officially become the first addition to his discography in 2021. “Alright” was the first song you heard this morning, and after that we played “Extra Weight”, a song that comes off of Benjy’s 2020 EP - Grace. Categorized as being “Alternative R&B”, Benjy’s sound is one of the most versatile that I’ve heard from both Massachusetts and beyond. He manages to evoke such a vast array of emotion by use of his sonics, and though his discography may not be the biggest up through this current point in time, each forthcoming release of his packs a different punch. Each individual track is an individual experience, something that has truly kept me, and a constantly growing amount of listeners, back in towards his catalog of music. With an abundance of music prepared for release in 2021, it’s safe to say that this is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what is next to come for Brockton’s Benjy Ali. The first track you heard was “Stunt 101” and the second was “Miss Her” featuring Saint Lyor, with both of these songs coming off of the Addicts’ 2020 album, Foundation. The iLL Addicts hold an incredible spot within the hearts of those here at Mass Music Radio. Back at our official launch party at Selfmade Designs in 2018, the iLL Addicts pulled up and did what they do best — create absolute chaos. I’ve not only written about the iLL Addicts many times, but I’ve been blessed with the chance to see them perform live on multiple occasions. Each and every single time, the energy is on 10, and ProSwervez is somewhere in the venue wearing a ski mask sweating profusely. It’s a vibe and a half if you will. Be sure to spin the iLL Addicts’ discography if you haven’t yet, as they’re one of the funnest groups of artists that Massachusetts has to offer.

Johan Lenox isn't your ordinary musician. While still attending elementary school, he managed to teach himself how to play the piano - something that would truly foreshadow what the next few decades of his life would entail. By the age of 26, he was traveling to various corners of the Globe, witnessing massive orchestras perform the music that Johan himself had composed. He was really making an imprint on the classical music community, something that up until now, I didn't know was too prevalent within Boston's music community. Fast forward to today, Johan Lenox is gearing up for the release of he debut album: What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up. His resume is jam-packed with a long list of some of the music industry's biggest elites: including Kanye West, Travis Scott, Big Sean, Vic Mensa, and so many more. Our Program Director, Shamus Hill, recently sat down with Johan to discuss his upcoming album, what it's like to work with one's idols, and how he's going about connecting classical music with that of contemporary times.
