Chord Of The Week - E7sus4(b9)

A what?! Don't be put off by the scary looking name, a E7sus4(b9) (1 4 5 b7 b9) chord is essentially a Bm7b5/E chord. Ideal for Phrygian/Phrygian Dominant flavours or, taken on its own, Melodic Minor 2nd mode, Dorian b2.

It's tricky to find musical examples of this chord, though the closely related sus4(b9) (1 4 5 b9) chord is popular with a few Jazz composers such as the great Wayne Shorter and Kenny Dorham. 

Try the example progression and you'll instantly hear that exotic Phrygian sound.
