The ship trembled as the Vantoth vessel latched onto them with a tractor beam, dragging them in like prey caught in a web. Neon clenched her fists, forcing herself to stay grounded. The air in the cabin felt thin, and the walls seemed to close in around her as the situation spiraled.

“Time’s ticking, Thorne,” the voice on the comm crackled again. “You have one chance to comply.”

Thorne exhaled slowly, his hands steady on the controls. “Let’s not keep them waiting,” he muttered, switching off the comm. He turned to Neon, his expression unreadable. “Here’s the deal: when we step out, keep the Coranthium hidden until I give you the signal.”

“What signal?” Neon asked sharply, her pulse quickening.

“You’ll know it,” he replied, his voice annoyingly cryptic.

“That’s not reassuring.”

“It’s the best I can do,” Thorne shot back. “Trust me on this.”

Her eyes narrowed, but there was no time to argue. The ship’s airlock hissed open, the oppressive silence replaced by the echo of heavy boots clanging against metal. Neon felt the weight of their presence before she saw them—the Vantoth boarding party entered, their figures shadowed in the dim light of the docking bay. They moved with an unnatural precision, their dark armor glinting ominously.

A tall figure emerged at the forefront, his helmet etched with intricate patterns that shimmered faintly, a testament to his rank. “Thorne,” he drawled, his voice cutting through the air like a blade. “You’ve made things… inconvenient.”

Thorne stepped forward, his body language calm but coiled, like a predator waiting for the right moment to strike. “I prefer the term ‘creative problem-solving.’ You want the Coranthium? Let’s talk terms.”

The leader tilted his head, the faintest suggestion of amusement breaking through his stern demeanor. “Terms?” He gestured at the ship with a gauntleted hand. “You’re hardly in a position to bargain.”

Thorne smirked. “Aren’t I? You know how unstable the Coranthium can be in the wrong hands. Do you really want to risk a detonation this close to your ship?”

Neon’s breath caught. Was that bluff or truth? Thorne’s calm delivery made it impossible to tell.

The Vantoth leader took a step closer, the air around him seeming to grow colder. “You’re bold, Thorne. I’ll give you that. But we both know your tricks only last so long.” His gaze shifted briefly to Neon. “And who’s this? Your insurance policy?”

Neon held his stare, forcing herself not to flinch. “I’m the one who decides how this plays out,” she said, her voice icy. “You want the Coranthium? Let him speak.”

The leader chuckled, a low, humorless sound. “Interesting. Very well, Thorne. You have two minutes to impress me—or this negotiation ends.”

Thorne nodded, his expression unreadable. “You’ll want to listen closely.” He glanced at Neon, the faintest flicker of something—reassurance?—in his eyes.

And then he began to weave his lie.
