"Matasuna Records" proudly presents the exclusive re-release of "Moto Moto" and "Zebra Talk" by "Renegades Of Jazz" for the first time on a 45. Both tracks were originally released in 2016 on David Hanke's critically acclaimed "Moyo Wangu" album.

After its release, Moyo Wangu quickly became a very sought-after album on vinyl for collectors and DJs. On this third Renegades Of Jazz album, Hanke combines elements of Afrofunk with his love for breakbeats with club appeal.

Having spent his early childhood in Arusha/Tanzania in the early 1980s, producing an Afrofunk album was on Hanke's list for a long time to reconnect with his time living there. With his love for African rhythms and club music, Hanke produced with Moyo Wangu a blend containing the best of both worlds.

Later, he continued his Afrofunk journey under his "Dem Juju Poets" alias and released his album "Liberated Thoughts" here on Matasuna Records in 2017, which also quickly sold out.

"Moto Moto" is featured on the a-side of our new 45, an infectious opener which captures the hot, vital feeling of a crowded dance floor throughout an amazing night out. Catchy drums and frenzied percussions meet funk guitars, a deep grooving bassline, great horns and vibrant vocals.

"Zebra Talk" on the b-side is an exciting collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Ingo Moell aka "Kabanjak", also known for his projects like Deela and as one-half of Ancient Astronauts. Together they create a mesmerizing tapestry of sound that slowly builds, immersing the listener in the groove and captivating them.

Hanke and Moell continued working together on their new project The Maenads, exploring the depths of electronic club music.

Recorded in the band's studio on multiple tracks using analog methods and equipment, the song boasts an opulent, organic sound. Batua is a funky, psychedelic journey interspersed with soulful & harmonious interludes and stirring percussive breaks.

Flipping to the B-side, "Love Me & Give Up" offers a more soulful, relaxed contrast, showcasing the band's versatility. A laid-back beat sets the stage, with keys and guitars weaving a soulful sound tapestry.The chorus, delivered with restrained conviction and backed by a warm organ, evoke a Motown-esque charm.

Founded in 2019, Bidaide began as a duo with "Asier del Álamo" and "Juan Cruz Chiappara". With the arrival of "Sergio Caño" (keyboards), "Manuel Diaz" (drums), and "Nacho Llauradó" (Telecaster), the duo blossomed into a vibrant band. Through experimentation and maturation, they forged their own distinct sound, reflected in their 2021-2022 recordings titled "BATUA" (Basque for "unity"). These recordings embody the spiritual essence of a group that has found and solidified its own powerful sound, showcasing its talent for arrangements and harmonies.

Some members of Bidaide, who already knew Matasuna and their releases through their involvement in the "Gatzara Soundsystem", sent Matasuna their demo of the recordings in mid-2003. Their fresh, impressive sound immediately found open ears. This connection paved the way for Bidaide's exciting vinyl debut, marking a new chapter in their musical journey.

Bidaide - Batua | Love Me & Give Up

Exactly three years ago, "Matasuna Records" released a hot Latin 45 feat. two songs by the Venezuelan band "Phirpo y sus Caribes", led by musician, arranger and conductor "Porfi Jiménez". Now, fortunately, two more tracks from the band's only album, "Parrilla Caliente", are being reissued on vinyl by Matasuna - and for the first time, on a 7-inch! The original pressing of the 1972 album on "Philips" is a rare and valuable collector's item. Officially licensed by the family of the late musician. Don't miss this gem!

"Y Esa Pava Que?" on the A-side of the single is an explosive Latin funk joint written by Porfi Jiménez. An irresistible groover, opulently and densely orchestrated with virtuoso musicians showing off their musicality. Heavy drums, powerful horns, funky & slightly psychedelic keys & guitars are the basic ingredients, enriched with solo parts and vocal interludes.

The B-side features "Pa' Los Rumbero", a cover version of the song by New York Latin maestro "Tito Puente". In 1972, Puente recorded a great new version of his original 1955 composition. Phirpo y sus Caribes used this new version as the basis for their cover, compressing the Puente song to about two and a half minutes. The result is an energetic and upbeat song that proves that Porfi Jiménez and his bandmates were among the continent's finest musicians.

"Porfi Jiménez", whose real name was "Porfirio Jiménez Núñez", was born in 1928 in Hato Mayor del Rey in the "Dominican Republic". He began his musical training at the early age of 9. After studying at the Municipal Academy of Music he became a member of an orchestra at the radio station "Voz Dominicana". Its director "Enrico Cabiatti" introduced him to the art of arranging.

Due to the Trujillo dictatorship, he left the country in 1954 and went to "Venezuela", where the young musician became famous as a trumpeter and played in the most important groups of the time. The quality of his original arrangements opened the doors of the most famous record companies of the time in Venezuela. Porfi also became one of the most outstanding composers and arrangers of those years, rebuilding Cuban "José Pagé's" Cuban label "Velvet" in Venezuela and working for all the label's national and international singers.

At the end of the 50's until the beginning of the 60's, he worked in orchestras of various TV stations in the Venezuelan capital Caracas. In 1963, Jiménez founded his own orchestra, which became known as one of the most important musical groups in Venezuela throughout Latin America.

In the 70's, musical transformations resulted from the emergence of new musical styles & rhythms. Porfi Jimenez, as a contemporary artist and passionate jazzman, began to incorporate new musical elements into his songs that distanced him from the prevailing commercial style. This resulted in the album "Parrilla Caliente", which was released as the band "Phirpo y sus Caribes" and remained the band's only album. The production, practically unknown, allowed him to experiment and express his artistic creativity, distancing himself from the traditional style of his dance orchestra.

Salsa music and its orchestras lost importance in the 80s and were displaced by new music. However, another Caribbean rhythm filled the gap: the "Merengue", which triggered an international boom. Porfi also embarked on this path, releasing an album that immediately catapulted him back to fame. It was a period in which he received numerous awards, such as two gold and one platinum disc.

Shortly before his death, on June 9th 2010, Porfi Jiménez managed to realize his lifelong dream: the formation of his jazz big band, with which he performed at numerous festivals in Caracas. With it, he left an important musical legacy, with several original compositions and arrangements of the most prominent names in jazz history. In 2007, Porfi Jiménez was honored by the "United Nations" as one of the most outstanding musicians of the continent.

Phirpo y sus Caribes - Y Esa Pava Que? | Pa' Los Rumberos

Longtime label friend and supplier of numerous edits, "Voodoocuts", teams up with "Matasuna Records" again for a new officially licensed 45. This time he puts his hands on two disco gems by the South African band "The Movers", one of the most important South African bands that shaped the country's music scene from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. The songs "Soweto Disco" and "Shanana" from the late seventies get the Voodoocuts treatment with his typical precision and attention to musical detail. The fusion of South African music with international influences such as jazz, funk and disco is an explosive mix and a secret weapon for every record bag.

Voodoocuts kicks off the single with his stunning edit of "Soweto Disco". The original is already extremely infectious and energetic, with a grooving bass, opulent horn sections, wild organ parts and a relaxed reggae vibe. But Voodoocut manages to give the song an extra kick with his skillful rearrangement, drumming and the addition of loops, filters, effects and samples. The edit effortlessly takes the song into the present to deliver a killer cut for the dancefloor.

On the flip side, "Shanana" is another delicacy from the band's later creative period. Although the mood is more relaxed, it's a wonderful song with its distinctive bass and guitar lines, as well as the great organs that are always present. Voodoocuts Edit builds up the song slowly to give the instruments enough space to unfold. A wonderful jazz-funk tune with a disco touch, enhanced by the Voodoocuts treatment.

The story begins in the turbulent townships of South Africa in the 1960s, when unknown musicians and brothers "Norman" and "Opa Hlongwane" approached "Kenneth Siphayi", a wealthy businessman, with the idea of supplying them with musical instruments in exchange for a share of live performances and record sales. Siphayi agreed and even became their manager, providing them with a rehearsal space and an organist. This was the beginning of the band "The Movers", whose name was also given by Siphayi.

The Movers developed a unique sound that combined traditional South African rhythms and melodies with influences from American soul, jazz and funk. Their sound was both danceable and emotionally profound. Inspired by the challenges and hopes of everyday life in the townships, their music took listeners' hearts by storm. Their energetic performances and catchy melodies quickly made them one of the most popular bands in the country. This was reflected in the sales of their first album, "Crying Guitar", which sold over half a million copies in the first few months after its release.

But their music was more than entertainment; it was an expression of the hope and resistance of an entire generation. Despite their immense popularity, The Movers, like many other black artists in apartheid South Africa, faced many challenges: Segregation, censorship, and limited opportunities to bring their music to a wider audience. However, they overcame these challenges. Their song "Soweto Inn" even became the soundtrack for the student revolts of the mid-1970s.

However, the band also experienced repeated upheavals due to a change of band members and the dismissal of their manager in 1976. The gap was filled by the producer, who took a more active role in the band's musical direction. By the end of the 1970s, none of the original members were still active and the musical landscape in South Africa began to change. The emergence of new musical styles and political pressure from the apartheid government presented challenges to the band. Despite these adversities, The Movers remained active, recording new music and proving their adaptability and creativity.

Even after their active time, the legacy of The Movers has remained alive. Their music is still listened to and appreciated today, and they are considered trailblazers for many musicians in South Africa.

"The Blaxound" is a Barcelona-based music project with deep ties to the city's Funk and Soul sceney. The project started in 2003 under the direction of musician, songwriter and producer "Marta Roman". The Blaxound has released four studio albums between 2007 and 2024 on different labels.

Years ago, Marta focused on the idea of recording a classic soul album sung in Spanish, respecting as much as possible the original production and sound of the late 60s and early 70s. Luckily, she met singer "Ivan Espejo" aka "John Vermont", which was the turning point and led to the full vocal album "Déjalo Ir" released on "Love Soul Productions" in 2024.

All songs were composed, recorded and produced by Marta Roman in her own studio, Black Flamingo Recordings, in Barcelona, Spain.

The Blaxound & John Vermont - No Es Por Ti | Qué Más Te Da?

"Matasuna" returns to Mexico again - this time to the musical epicenter "Monterrey" in the north of the country. The band "La Tribu" recorded there the song "No Te Quiero Mas (I Don't Want You More)", which was released on "Polydor" in 1971. The Latin soul joint is a gem among connoisseurs and it's difficult to get the original 45. Matasuna is therefore all the more pleased to be able to release the tune for the first time as an official reissue together with a fabulous edit by "Voodoocuts".

The A-side features the original of the song. "No Te Quiero Mas (I Don't Want You More)" is a killer uptempo Latin soul & funk song. The drums, horns, organ and bass create a fast-paced foundation that is enriched by the vocals of singer "Leopoldo 'Polo' Sánchez Labastida". A massive tune!

The B-side features an edit by "Voodoocuts", who has already put his musical stamp on various "Matasuna" releases. Here, too, he delivers another terrific edit that respectfully takes on the original material. His clever re-arrangement expands the song and his drums spice up the already great original. In particular, his solo drum breaks provide additional explosive moments and lead to a furious reinterpretation of the song.

"Monterrey" is the capital of the northeastern Mexican state of "Nuevo León". Along with "Mexico City", Monterrey is one of the musical epicenters in Mexico. On the one hand, through "Cumbia Tropical", the Mexican version of "Cumbia". This music achieved great fame especially through the Sonideros: music lovers and DJs who played that music to the neighborhoods with their sound systems.
But Rock music also has a long history in this city. One of these bands was "La Tribu", founded at the end of the 60s. Like many other rock groups of that time, they covered various songs of successful bands such as the Beatles, Chicago, Ides Of March and others. In 1969, their debut LP "Great Britains Best Sellers" was released: a compendium of cover versions of popular hits sung in Spanish.

In 1971 they recorded music with their own compositions and released an EP with three songs, where "Por Perderte (For Losing You)" became the band's most famous song. The success led them to be scheduled for the "Festival Rock y Ruedas de Avándaro" held in September 1971. It was a historic rock festival that took place in the spirit of "Woodstock" in front of a huge audience and went down in the musical annals in Mexico. The participation could have greatly influenced their musical path. But for unknown reasons their place was filled at the last minute by another band.

In 1972 they recorded new songs in order to regain the lost ground caused by their failure to participate at the Avándaro festival. However, the great success should remain denied to them. Also they never finished a second LP.

This was certainly due to the political situation that arose in the aftermath of the "Avándaro" Music Festival. Drug use, sex and nudity were denounced in media campaigns in newspapers, radio and television and had far-reaching and harsh consequences. Rock music was censored in many places: rock clubs had to change their music program or even close down. So this music really disappeared or had to go underground.

On the other hand, the death of lead singer "Leopoldo 'Polo' Sánchez Labastida" in 1974 made it very difficult for the band to record new music, so the band practically disappeared from the scene.

It wasn't until the new millennium that the remaining living members got back together to sporadically perform their "hits" as well as other cover songs at events in the north of the republic - especially their hometown of Monterrey.

La Tribu - No Te Quiero Mas (I Don't Want You More) Voodoocuts Edit

After last year's musical excursions to Central & South America and South Africa, Berlin-based reissue label "Matasuna Records" is once again making a detour to the USA for its first release in 2023. Two funk milestones by "United 8" and "Tony Alvon & The Belairs" have been selected from the archives of "Atlantic Records". Apart from a release as part of a Funk45's box set by Warner in 2004, the songs have only appeared on various bootlegs in the past.

Matasuna Records is thrilled tofinally release them as an officially licensed reissue with new mastering as a 7-inch vinyl single. This release is an absolute must-have for all funk enthusiasts, DJs and collectors.

"Getting Uptown (To Get Down)" by "United 8" is a funk classic released on Atlantic Records in 1972. The musicians of United 8 created an infectious sound with a combination of horns, guitars, drums and bass. The drums drive the beat and give the track its distinctive rhythm, while the bass provides a powerful, pulsating foundation. The horns add a jazzy note, while the guitar adds a funky touch.

David Hanke aka Renegades Of Jazz, brainchild behind Dem Juju Poets, keeps on with his distinctive Afro sound and delivers a great 45 in various styles. Dem Juju Poets - People's Republic (Matasuna Records | msr002)

First ever official reissue of Zamba Zamba by Peruvian band Sangre Joven! Originally released in 1975 by MAG (Lima | Peru) the 7inch vinyl is hardly available and a rare latin gem. Any information about Sangre Joven is just as rare as the vinyl: there is in fact nothing about the band to be found on the internet.

Nevertheless, with a little help by a peruvian friend we got some details: "Zamba Zamba" is a peruvian version of the track "Samba Samba" by Colombian brothers Elkin & Nelson, who moved to Spain in the 70s. The band Sangre Joven consists of musicians from the famous Peruvian group Nil's Jazz Ensemble of jazz musician, composer and arranger Nilo Espinosa. When their musical direction changed, they switched their name to Sangre Joven and released a funky & discoid album and one single on the Peruvian label MAG in 1975. Both original pressings are very difficult to find nowadays, so we're more than happy to release this on Matasuna Records! The track was restored from the reel to reel master tapes and also got a new mastering by Carvery (London).

In addition to the original Zamba Zamba version, the DJ & producer Voodoocuts contributed a superb edit to this 7inch and both tracks spread a sunny Afro-Latin vibe that catches you immediately. While the original is perfect for a relaxed set on the beach, the Voodoocuts' Edit is a real killer tune for the dancefloor. The funky acoustic guitar perfectly harmonized with the electric piano and the super sweet vocals on the percussive breaks will really heat you up! As always: a seven inch not to be missed!

The newest addition to the Matasuna Records label roster is Greek producer and beatmaker Kill Emil. For the upcoming 7inch vinyl single he delivers two great Afro-Tropical joints.

Kill Emil has been on the road for almost a decade and has a remarkable output of singles & LPs on various labels. Rooted in Hip Hop he produces tracks with different influences from all over the world. Sophisticated beats, positive grooves and warm loops characterize his sound and make him a sought-after producer and live performer. So it's not surprising that he regularly tours all over Europe.

The opening track Matata is a midtempo groover with rhythmic guitar melodies, catchy brass lines and mystical vocal parts. Kill Emil skilfully embeding them into his beat framework by adding various effects and echoes to create a new and hypnotic sound. A delicious Afrolatin joint that gets you moving!
On the flipside another tropical gem delivering some Latin madness. With Humanidad Kill Emil shows his beatmaker skills by chopping the samples, reassembling them and adding some heavy breaks and percussions to boil a hot and stirring mixture. NYC Salsa at its best!

Dubben is back! The highly esteemed producer duo make their debut on Matasuna Records with this superb 7inch. The two have been active since 2007 and released great music with their unmistakable style on labels like GAMM, Resense or Dejavue. Their reworks are not only appreciated by brasileiros, but are also popular all over the world.

With "Jesus Boogie" on the A-side, Dubben turns in a new direction and give this Brazilian gem from the 70s a nice boogie touch. The focus of their treatment is the dance floor, so that the usual dub effects are not used here. The result is an extremely danceable number that makes you scream for more!

On the B-side you'll get "Cachaça" - a rework of an obscure 60s bossa number from Poland. The song was re-arranged and got new rhythm parts, which were flavoured with additional sounds and various effects. The extended dub part with psychedelic harmonica and delays blends seamlessly into the track. A great tune in beloved Dubben style!

Matasuna Records presents another treat with its latest release: an official reissue with two songs of the US funk band "Calender". Both tracks are available on a 12" Maxi-Single for the first time. In addition to the mastered original versions, this EP features great reworks by two of our favorite producers: Mexican disco edit king "Hotmood" and the highly acclaimed Matasuna artist "Voodoocuts".

The band "Calender" from New Jersey was founded in the 70s by Paul Kyser. Besides his activities as songwriter, arranger and producer he set up his label Pi Kappa Records. The band's only album "It's a Monster" was released on this label in 1976 and has grown into a legendary status over the years and is appreciated by fans and collectors alike.

The opener "Hypertension" is a disco banger par excellence. Kyser's sophisticated arrangements merge thrilling grooves, elegant strings, varied funk elements and soulful vocals to a great and unique joint for every dancefloor. It's very pleasing that the song doesn't get overloaded or cheesy, as it's often the case in disco music.
Hotmood transfers the track, which was created more than 3 decades ago, into the present time. His great disco edit focuses on the instrumental parts of the original. Thanks to his clever arrangement, a tension curve is constantly built up without seeming repetitive.

On the flipside, "Ritmo Latino" takes a different musical direction. As the name suggests, there are all kinds of Latin American influences to be heard: the brass section, rhythm parts, piano sounds and the grooving bass line, which goes straight into the veins. Nevertheless, the song is also strongly rooted in funk & jazz and inspires its listeners with its unique character.
Voodoocuts rework comes up with a monster broken beat and gives the song a dancefloor friendly structure with its new arrangement. Especially the killer break part in the middle of the song will not only make B-Boy hearts beat faster! Additional instruments, samples and effects give the rework an individual and autark touch and prove once again impressively that Voodoocuts is setting the bar higher and higher with his productions.

Matasuna Records is delighted to reissue another jewel on vinyl: Ralph Week‘s song 'Let Me Do My Thing' is probably the most sought after Panamanian soul tune and the rare original 7inch is sold at incredible prices. The song was recorded together with the band 'Los Dinámicos Exciters' in 1971 in Panama. 

During our research we were lucky to find Mr. Weeks, who could give us some background information to this song and his  music career in general. Ralph Weeks was born 1943 in Panama, which he left at the age of 17 to move to the United States. There he founded the band 'Ralph & Telecasters' at the beginning of the 1960s. After his time in the US Army he started the band again, recorded their first single in 1965  and went touring in the United States during the following years. Among other gigs they also played twice in the famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem (NYC) where one of the greatest musicians like Louis Armstron, James Brown, Marvin Gaye etc. performed there. 
The charismatic singer and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass & keyboard) was invited to a show in Panama in 1970, where he performed with members of the band 'Los Dinámicos Exciters ', which he knew from his youth. In 1971 he came back again and recorded four songs with the band, which were released on the album "Lo Mejor De Los Dinámicos Exciters". Two of the recordings were also released under Ralph's name as a 7inch vinyl single on the Panamanian label "Sally Ruth Records" - among them "Let Me Do My Thing".
Then he returned to the States and founded a new band in 1975 with Carlos Brown, a member of the Exciters, which existed for about 25 years. Weeks' life has always been dedicated to music: even today, at the age of 76, he is still a member of an accapella gospel group that sings weekly at the church in his hometown in the state of Connecticut.

On the A-side of the vinyl you can listen to the amazing original version recorded in 1971 - which was remastered for the release. The funky Latintune has all the ingredients that helped him to his status as one of the best Panamanian soul songs: a killer rhythm, a deep grooving bass line, the virtuoso interplay of the trumpet players and the super sweet soul voice of Ralph Weeks. There's nothing more to add, but our favourite producer "Voodoocuts" was able to get something out of the original. On the B-side you'll find his version of the classic: a modified arrangement with a new in and outro, an extended break part and additional beats that will set every dance floor on fire. In September 2019 Matasuna opened the treasure box and reissued two rare original versions from the Peruvian band "Bossa 70" for the first time on 7inch. With the new release, two more songs from their popular self-titled album will be officially reissued on a 45. The songs were transferred from the original master tapes and got a new mastering.

Matasuna invited the US-American DJ & Producer "Retro Roland Riso" to put his hands on the original versions to create two reworks, which are suitable for today's dancefloors. Roland is almost a veteran of Philadelphia's nightlife and can look back on a 20 year career as a radio host, promoter, DJ and producer.

Think on the A-side is a great cover version of the same named song by Souldiva "Aretha Franklin" from 1968. "Bossa 70" gave the song its own touch and in their instrumental version they put the focus on the brass parts, bassline, wild guitar solos and an upbeat rhythm. Retro Roland Riso's rework puts even more pressure on the song, creating a bomb for the dancefloor!

"Get Out Of My Way" on the flipside is another fantastic cover version of a fabulous Latin/Boogaloo song of "Joe Torres" from 1967. The Retro Roland treatment remains true to the original arrangement, but he spices up the song in his Regroove with a big dash of breaks and percussions. Another weapon for every DJ bag!

"Nilo Espinoza Vascones" or better known under his artist name "Nilo Espinosa" is without doubt a Peruvian saxophone and flute legend. After a classical musical education he entered the music scene in the early 1960s. In 1966 he founded the band "Los Hilton's" with some of the best Peruvian musicians including the gifted piano player "Otto de Rojas". In 1967 they recorded the first and only LP of the group, which was released in a small edition in Peru.

Their concerts were more and more influenced by Jazz and Bossa Nova, so in 1968 they changed the band's name to "Bossa 70". In the record label's office Nilo met the Afro-Peruvian "Carmen Rosa Basurco", who also loved Bossa Nova and could sing in Portuguese and English. From then on she was the main singer of the band.

"Bossa 70" recorded four songs for a 7-inch EP in an edition of only 100 copies, which was given away for promotional purposes at concerts and to friends & family. In 1970 they recorded their self-titled LP which reflected a mixture of Bossa Nova, Latin Jazz and Funk. The label pressed only 300 copies, which were sold out very quickly. This LP was the band's only album and is a rare piece of Peruvian music history.

Bossa 70 - Think (Retro Roland Riso Perfecto Rework)

Matasuna Records starts the new year 2020 with a brilliant release, featuring two contemporary tracks by Paris based Afrobeat band Batunga & The Subprimes, available for the first time on vinyl.

Batunga & The Subprimes was founded in Paris in 2009 by musicians from different backgrounds, united by the will to mix traditional African music with other elements (Latin, Jazz, Second Line and even Rock) and to bring this explosive mix on the streets & on stage. After many shows all over Europe and beyond, their first official album Man in the Field was published in 2017, followed by their EP Let dem In in late 2019. Matasuna has chosen two extraordinary cuts of these self-released albums to release them on vinyl for the first time.

Gates Of Ouantou from their EP is a great tune that sets the bar for contemporary Afrobeat and has all the ingredients for a timeless classic: the arrangement, the instrumentation and the interplay of the seven musicians in the song are excellent and will immediately draw you into its spell. A real gem and great tune!

Man in the Field on flipside is a cut of their first official album. Unusual is the use of a banjo in an Afrobeat song but not surprising that this fits in very well and also shows that classical structures can be broken up and developed in a new approach/context. Another great piece of this extraordinary band that has been operating under the radar - until now!

"Matasuna Records" is delighted to reissue one of their absolute highlights and favourite songs of "Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc". As well as the original version, which was released on a 7inch by "Mr. Bongo" a few years ago and is completely sold out, they've included a rework by the restless and well-known US producer & Dj "Bosq". His version, which became a DJ weapon as a digital promo, is now officially licensed on vinyl for the first time. For this release his version was revised once again for the best possible sound quality on an essential 7inch with the newly mastered original song.

"Joseph Van Het Groenewoud", who would later become known as "Nico Gomez", was a musician & composer from the Netherlands. He spent his youth in the Antilles, Cuba and other islands of the Caribbean, which had an unmistakable influence on his music. As a passionate musician and skilled guitarist he was familiar with the typical rhythms and melodies of this region. Later he returned to the Netherlands, before fleeing from there to Belgium in 1946 to escape from serving in the Dutch army in Indonesia. From then on he called himself "Nico Ooms". It's said that he was so obsessed with Cuban music that he changed his name to "Nico Gomez" - in any case, the name fit better with the Latin American music he brought to the stage. He had made a name for himself as a composer and arranger for various artists and orchestras – e.g. he wrote for "Los Chakachas", a well-known Belgian Latinsoul combo. But he also conducted the "Nico Gomez Orchestra".

One of the most sought-after recordings was the 1971 album "Ritual" by his band "Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc". It is considered one of the best Afrolatin albums of the 1970s - especially once this masterpiece was (re)discovered by Djs and its popularity soared. The album is a tasty mixture of Latinfunk grooves, deep Afrosoul and Chicano rock influences like fuzzy guitar and heavy organ.

"Lupita" on the A-side is a cover version of the song by "Perez Prado", the Cuban-born King of Mambo, who has legendary status in his adopted country of Mexico. In contrast to Prado's elated original, Nico Gomez's version is an absolute funk monster, driven by heavy percussions, psychedelic organ grooves, fuzz guitar, exciting brass and a deep bass line. A truly extraordinary song!

Bosq's version on the B-side takes the original even further, adding more percussive elements and killer beats and breaks. His DJ-friendly rework has proven itself on dance floors around the world, always turning the mood into a hot melting pot.

After the successful "Lupita" 7inch in April 2020, Matasuna is delighted to reissue another Latin gem from "Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc.". "Baila Chibiquiban" is also a killer cut, which is now finally available again on 7" single. The original version is complemented by a great edit by Frenchman "Tonton Boom" (aka "Mr. Boom"), who had already attracted attention as a digital promo some time ago. For this official release, his version got a new analog mix at "Microgroove Studio" in Toulouse to sound better than ever. Another essential 7inch for every record collection.

The original version of "Baila Chibiquiban" on the A-side is a killer latin psych funk tune written by Nico Gomez. A distinctive bassline, fuzz guitar, deep rhodes, tons of breaks and soulful vocals make a funk monster that burns everything down.

Mr. Boom's version on the B-side takes the original even further, to underline this not only on the percussive side. His new arrangement continuously heads towards the climax, which is interrupted by a break to create new tension. Already successfully tested, this edit - which was longed for by many on 7inch - will get a permanent place in record bags and make dancefloors explode.

Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc. -  Baila Chibiquiban (Tonton Boom Edit)

With the help of a Lisbon friend, Matasuna Records has managed to reissue two outstanding songs from the debut album of Angolan musician "Chalo Correia" on a hot & fiery 7inch. Although the album was originally released in 2015, only a handful of people outside Portugal were lucky enough to get their hands on one of the coveted copies. This is unfortunate, as Correias music uniquely combines traditional Angolan styles with new melodies, creating a intoxicating & exotic mix. For this release the tracks were remastered and the title track was even completely mixed again to achieve the best possible sound.

"Chalo Correia" is a talented singer and songwriter born in 1968 in "Luanda", the capital of "Angola". He grow up in the most intense and blazing musical period of Angola - the 70s. In a time when musician fought for independence, reinventing the Angolan sound in order to re-establish their identity. In his late youth, Chalo met musicians from revolutionary bands like Os Merengues and Os Kiezos, who would influence his future music.

In the early 90s Chalo moved to Portugal, where he practiced guitar and harmonica. Far away from his country, music was the only way to connect with his roots and so he started to create original songs based on traditional & urban music styles of Angola and on early childhood memories. During the last 20 years his music went through a long process of maturation, which resulted in the recording of his debut album "Kudihohola" in 2015. In 2016, this album was nominated as one of the best popular music album at the Angolan Music Awards.

Chalo is a very versatile musician: you can find him with his explosive 5-piece band at concerts in Europe, Brazil and Africa, prestigious world music festivals, or mixing a Portuguese guitar from the traditional Fado with Angolan music in his trio. But you can also meet him at a tireless one-man show, where he plays traditional Angolan guitar chords, handled by syncopated and percussive complex rhythms like Semba - the precursor of Brazilian Samba - among other traditional urban Angolan styles like Massemba, Kilapanga, Rumba, Kazucuta, Kabetula and RebitQa. His vigorous voice sings about the Angolan daily life stored in Chalo's childhood memories, combined with his life experience as an Angolan immigrant in Lisbon. The harmonica joins his instrumental compositions with energetic melodies that fit perfectly with his new music, combining an old, festive flavored style with a contemporary way of songwriting.

The A-side of the single starts with the title song "Kudiholola". Kuhohola (correct term in the Quimbundu language of Angola is Kudiholola) which means to heal from a hangover, but where Chalo Correia, takes the title as a restart and a return to the traditions and roots that had been stuck in the past. The melody is embedded in the Angolan Kazukuta style that manages to give life and brilliance to this instrumental where the harmonica fills the contours of the music. Kudihohola is an imaginary microcosm of Angolanity in terms of culture in general, but also the image of interpersonal relationships.

"Chercher Crioula" on the B-side, sung in "Quimbundo" and the choirs in "French", reports an incessant search for a love that insists on not appearing. This search is not limited to one country or continent but to many places in the world, which makes the author adapt to the places, as time prolongs that same search.

About four years after the label was founded in summer 2016, "Matasuna Records" is about to drop its 25th release. To celebrate this anniversary, Matasuna has dug up another treat and is delighted to reissue two songs from the legendary LP "1973" by Belgian jazz-funk group "Placebo" of jazz legend "Marc Moulin", who is rightly considered one of the rare groove Holy Grails. Both songs are available for the first time as official reissue on 7inch vinyl - the title song is even available on 45 for the first time ever. Of course there was a new mastering for the best possible sound.

"Marc Moulin" was born 1942 in Ixelles, Brussels where he also took music lessons. He studied economics and political science - but his passion was music, which guided his career. He made his first steps in the Belgian jazz scene in 1961 at the Festival "Comblain-la-Tour", where he won the "Bobby-Jaspar trophy" for best soloist.

In the 1960s he was a member of various jazz formations before founding the band "Placebo" with his close friend, guitarist "Philip Catherine", in the early 1970s. The septet recorded three albums and a single from 1971 until its dissolution in 1976. On these recordings Moulin is surrounded by the crème de la crème of the Belgian music scene. The group played a unique mixture of jazz, soul, rock and funk with electronic elements, which Moulin elicited from his Moog synthesizer. Some of these musicians also contributed to Moulin's cult album "Sam Suffy", which was released in 1975.

After the dissolution of Placebo, Moulin took a break from jazz and appeared as a producer for various artists. In 1978 Moulin founded the synth pop band "Telex", with which he recorded five longplayers between 1979 and 1986. These recordings are considered groundbreaking for the Detroit techno and transatlantic house scene.

In the late 1990s, Moulin returned to his jazz roots when he combined his two great loves, jazz and electronic dance music. He signed to "Blue Note", where he released three albums. His first album on Blue Note 2001 sold over 100,000 copies worldwide.

Parallel to his musical activities, Moulin was a radio presenter, journalist and composer, but also worked as a journalist and radio editor. Moulin died on September 26, 2008 at the age of 66.

"Polk" is opening the single and couldn't be a better start: the irresistible groove digs deep into the ear. Marc Moulin's virtuoso piano playing wafts around the driving wah-wah guitar, the bass line and the beats. The brass section sneaks in discreetly to create a grandiose sound spectrum. Jazz-Funk at its best!

Without a doubt, "Balek" is one of the most extraordinary tunes on the album and rightly enjoys cult status not only among rare groove collectors. But also in the Hip Hop scene Balek is a hot joint – e.g. El Da Sensei or Mos Def have dropped their rhymes on this beat. Obscure synthesizer soundscapes with psychedelic sounds, supersweetened keys, unique brass passages and kicking drums give the song a magical aura. Great!

"Matasuna Records" is delighted to make a musical detour to Mexico for the first time with its new release. The 7inch contains two rare Latinfunk & -Soul songs of Mexican band "Apache". The songs "Liberate" and "Hombre" were released in 1975 & 1976 and are now available on vinyl again for the first time ever. This time Matasuna companion "Voodoocuts" is back again to contribute a formidable rework of "Hombre".

Members of the band "La Fórmula ER77" formed "Apache" in the early 70s in Torreón, Mexico. The 8-piece band performed on many stages, but became known to a larger audience through an appearance on the popular Mexican TV show "Siempre en Domingo". Another success was their song "Kung Fu Chino", which was popular throughout Latin America.

In 1976, their first LP "Del Bumpin Al Hustle" was released, which contains, with one exception, only cover versions of international hits from that time. Although the originals were popular music, Apache adopted them with their own funky attitude.

At the end of the decade, the original group disbanded. Two members joined with other musicians in the early 80s to pursue a different musical direction under the new band name "Tropicalisimo Apache", which is still active today.

"Liberate" is a song composed by "Rafaél Gonzáles, who was also responsible for the production of the LP. The song is the only original composition on the album and differs stylistically from the other songs not only because of that: Liberate is a heavy Latin funk joint par excellence that leaves you wanting more!

On the flip side, you won't be disappointed: "Hombre" is another great song composed and arranged by the band's trumpet player, "Ernesto Haros". "Voodoocuts" Rework strips down the original to its instrumental base to skillfully build a new arrangement, which is enriched by additional samples, a bunch of beats and breaks and various effects. Without a doubt another tropical dancefloor treat!
