What does the future of peace and quiet look like? Is it possible for someone to find serenity in a world where population mushrooms and buildings continuously jockey for the best possible view? With Kael Smith’s (Mombi, Khale) Mute Forest this dichotomy is at the epicenter of his 'Infinity Pools EP' due April 7th via Lost Tribe Sound. 

To coincide with visuals courtesy of Gregory Euclide (Bon Iver, Erased Tapes), Smith’s debut EP fuses acoustic sounds, mangled electronics and provocative lyrics across four meditative yet mesmerizing tracks. 

Serving as a companion piece to his expansive and sonorous LP, 'Deforestation', due later this year, Smith’s 'Infinity Pools EP' was actually written as a reaction to that material but will be released first.“ 'Deforestation' will in a sense be a prequel to the EP,” explains Smith. “And for listeners who follow along, should provide an interesting reverse narrative,” he concludes. 

“Crypt,” the EP’s opener, contains oscillating vinyl-sampled rhythms, chiming electric guitar and gently struck nylon guitar. Following that is the sparce and haunting “Volcanoes Flowing,” which traces a melancholy beat and slow, lovely piano crescendos to its heartbreaking conclusion. 

Darker in tone, title track "Infinity Pools" has a commanding presence using ominous electronics and damaged samples of Le Creuset pots being struck. Heavily processed and featuring vocals from Smith’s longtime girlfriend Kelly O’Brien, the track unfurls into a hypnotic groove over the chilling words “You’ll feel like an ember trilling/out in space.” 

Washing over the listener to conclude the EP, “Eat the Skin” originally started as an A Winged Victory for the Sullen remix of a song off of their recent LP, 'Atomos'. As the track progressed though, all of the layers performed by AWVFTS were eventually stripped leaving only acoustic guitar and Smith’s voice. “I like to pretend we wrote that song together, hopefully someday they will hear it” desires Smith. He uses the big, cavernous sound of acoustic guitar as base for unhurried, dulcet vocals and airy electronics. “I’ve always loved the big, acoustic sound of Seafood’s “Desert Stretched Before the Sun”“ explains Smith. “I really tried to emulate that deep resonate tone where the acoustic sounds like a tidal wave.”

'The Future is a Forward Escape Into the Past' is the latest album by Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist and composer Yann Novak, and his second for Touch. It considers the relationships between memory, time, and context through four vibrantly constructed tracks that push Novak’s work in a new direction while simultaneously exploring his sonic past. 'The Future is a Forward Escape Into the Past' is composed as a quadriptych – a single gesture broken into four parts – that meditates on the inevitable progression of time, our relationship to the past, and our distortion of the past through the imperfections of memory. The album will be released February 23, 2018 on the London-based label Touch. Available digitally and on CD, the physical version will be packaged in a gatefold sleeve as a limited edition of 500. The album’s conceptual roots stem from 'The Archaic Revival' by American ethnobotanist and psychonaut Terence McKenna. In it, McKenna theorizes that when a culture becomes dysfunctional it attempts to revert back to a saner moment in its own history. He suggested that abstract expressionism, body piercing and tattooing, psychedelic drug use, sexual permissiveness, and rave culture were proof of this default to a more primal time. The text’s idealism was influential to Novak in the ‘90s, but today the theory bears a darkly-veiled resemblance to the rise of nostalgia-driven nationalism. Regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with the signifiers of a ‘better time’ - McKenna’s idea highlights our propensity for selective memory, seeing history through the lens of memory instead of fact. On 'The Future is a Forward Escape Into the Past' Novak looked back at his own older works through this lens as inspiration.

“For this album I was interested in expanding into a more emotive compositional style and palette. In doing so, I was reminded that this was territory I had covered early on in my career — the whole process became a way to reconnect with my own past and history.”

The Album’s four tracks dynamically shift and surge, where time is rendered as material and momentum compels it into movement. Subtle distortion throughout the album ties the tracks together and echoes techniques explored in Novak’s 'Meadowsweet' (Dragon’s Eye, 2006). Tension gives way to a halcyon vision of place in “Radical Transparency,” immediately followed by the austere swells of “The Inertia of Time,” a piece that captures the twin impulse of generating optimistic beauty in harshly muted tones. Both tracks introduce subtle bass swells and stabs reminiscent of 'In Residence' (Dragon’s Eye, 2008). From there, the album grows darker with “Casting Ourselves Back into the Past,” and “Nothing Ever Transcends its Immediate Environment,” two icier tracks that preserve the album’s core: a layer of something long since passed that locks us into the very moment we inhabit. The latter introduces a processed vocal sample of Geneva Skeen, similar to Novak’s collaborative work with Marc Manning on 'Pairings' (Dragon’s Eye, 2007). The album is a study in perception and alteration, manipulation and awareness, effectively capturing Novak’s command of emotional texturing.

Nikolai Erastowitsch Bersarin, the ambivalent colonel general, communist and first Soviet city commander of Berlin, had an accident with his motorcycle in 1945 at the age of only 41. In the enraptured, now somewhat more compressed and at the same time more colorful (not more cheerful) electronic sound(track)s of the strange Bersarin Quartett, in its East Block sea landscapes with latently kitsched wallpaper and double bottoms, shadows of this strange figure Bersarin can be guessed - still or again - at a good 70 years later. But perhaps that is also irrelevant. This 'band' could just as well play imprisoned in the remixed court of the eternal, crazy North Korean presidents, whether embodied in an orchestra, quartet or as masked solo entertainer. It brings us supposedly post-rock and post-socialist grandeur, which has degenerated very slightly, in a great new splendour amidst all our irritations and emotions. And everything takes place in our heads.

The Bersarin Quartett - after thirteen years and three epic, (bad-)dreamlike beautiful albums - have settled down with their fourth album "Methoden und Maschinen" ("methods and machines"). For the time being. Because at the same time many new layers and paths are emerging. Playing live in many arrangements and at great concerts in Slovenia, Poland, Czech Republic and Russia, this has grown into a quartet, but it is still the project of DJ, musician, graphic and audio designer Thomas Bücker. The numerous concert evenings with Andy Stott, Tim Hecker, Fennesz, Murcof, Dictaphone or Hidden Orchestra, among others, are undoubtedly noticeable on "Methoden und Maschinen". The Bersarin Quartett continues to stand for the outing of a complex musical subconscious. 'The Dark Side of the Moon', only that the moon is shimmering here, at least now and then. It's probably also due to the sun shining on it. Minimalism and bombast go together. Constantly developing and entangling contrasts, paradoxes and contradictions are the motor. Constantly caught between two sides. Don’t believe the hype!
