I recorded this improvisation at a moment in my life where one major chapter had just ended and the next one hadn't yet began.  In October 2014 I lost my home and the man I love.  I spent the next few weeks fading away on a friend's couch until I needed to be taken to a hospital.  After a week in the hospital my family flew me back to the east coast where I spent the next month recovering.  When I returned to Los Angeles I had no home, no money, no job and I was alone.  All I had was my car, my keyboard and a little storage unit which I would be quite content never to step foot in again.  At first I thought I had nowhere to go except the streets or to move back to CT.  I was sitting at my keyboard trying to figure things out when realized by having almost nothing I could go anywhere and do anything.  I decided in that moment I was moving to San Diego.  I spent most of my last couple days in Los Angeles at my keyboard.  This was the last song I wrote before driving south.

This piece falls somewhere between an improvisation and a composition.  Originally the melody came to me while recording an improvisation which (other than that melody) I hated.  After taking a day to play with and focus entirely on that melody I started recording again.  This is what came out of that session.  

Where I Belong

Most of the time, my improvisations are completely unplanned and I have no idea what voice will reach up from the depths of my inner baggage and claim the stage.

But sometimes I take time to deeply think and reflect on a person, place, time or event before I sit down at the keyboard.  I wrote this piece while thinking back on a year of my life (and the man I spent it with) that was distinctly different from any other time in my life and so disconnected from almost every aspect of my life before and after it that as more time goes by I find myself remembering it more as a dream than an actual chapter of my life.  

I couldn't decide if I wanted the piano tone to be dreamy or bright.  It was a small decision, but the more I tried to choose the more I felt like I was actually deciding whether to file that year in my life's archives as "reality" or "fantasy".  I decided that the final recording should reflect how I think about it now, so I duplicated the track and layered both pianos, panning between them at various parts of the song.

My piano is my voice.  I started recording these compositions and improvisations a few years ago when I wanted to tell someone how much I love them and no words were sufficient.  In the process of writing and recording that piece, I decided to start recording my random improvisations as well (which despite having played most of my life, I've never done before).  That was the beginning of my first set, "Words Fail Me" and this page.
