Bubble Boy is the first tune that i wrote, produced, mixed and mastered myself. I took it offline from 2012-2015 while i tried to re-record a newer high quality version in a studio. It was one of those projects where the "demo-itis" just never goes away. I spent far too many years on this song until eventually i realised that i was fine with the original. So here it is.. back online, in its original form, with all its errors... i still love the fucking thing.. but it's time to move on :)

"One day in 2003 i sat by myself on the top deck of a boat on the Hawkesbury River in NSW, after the passing of someone very close to me. I was chain-smoking Marlboro Reds. There was a brief moment of vivid hallucination where for a few minutes it felt like i could see the world's blueprint, as if in wireframe. It was the most calming sensation I have ever experienced. Like a wash of understanding. A moment of intense pain progressed into an affirmation of just how remarkably small i was in context to the universe and how happy i felt that it had even let me grow to be a part of it." - Mathas

That’s my pearly gates mate,
strings plucking the plasma,
illustrating the universe,

either the prick or the lame claim pick of the fetal,
planet muzzled in that self-worth bubble.
When a nucleus is nutrient, DNA’s a maze,
dubious and indescript slowly come of age,
in that indefinite certain,
clapping through the curtain close,
10 years to the marker now I first stared at its code.
I saw the hills as mesh and the river a wire-frame,
its respiratory system huffing waves to wake and break.
That memory is interlinked with smoke, a bit of heartache,
me and Norah Jones wailing top deck of the boat,
with a soaked packet of Marlboro red top pocket of coat
willingly looking in limited intervals into the riff of the keynote.
I was 19, red gum sapping out the opens,
lucid, hallucinating, understanding motion.

Bravo Troll (Single Version)

In late 2017 I did a series of 5 workshops at the Wadjak Northside Aboriginal Resource Center with kids ranged 8-13 years old. Here's the final track they made. The kids made everything, all the percussive instruments were played live except the drum sounds they drummed out on a pad system. The synth sound is a single recorded note on the didgeridoo, played across a keyboard. Two of the kids freestyle rapped, one recorded the chorus and their mentors added some singing and a field recording of crows outside the center. Incredible result.

Desensitised

For fans of acclaimed Perth wordsmith Mathas, the last four years have been a quiet time. Tumbleweeds-through-a-ghost-town kinda quiet. His writing periods seem to go on forever, his releases miles apart. But for anyone who understands the study and depth that goes into writing a single Mathas song, they’re willing to wait. Mathas has always presented quality over quantity, as clichéd as that rings out on paper.

Mathas tends to create conversation starters instead of hard-edged declarative mic-drop moments of finality. His new single Airing Out, however, delivers a touch more directness than you may expect from him.

Airing Out is the first solo single Mathas has released in four years, since the drop and subsequent remix project for his song Bravo Troll in 2016.

In his own words:
“What started as a comedic and autobiographical song about frustrations with my own artistic process ended up as a rant of sorts about how tiresome a lot of the language and humour in rap music has become. I don’t believe in dismissing past art & humour because the world’s changing, nor do I have any arrogant illusions of my own authority in speaking about hip hop from any other country. I do however think it's important for me, in my birthplace, to speak on adjusting our present and future behaviour in support of voices calling for that necessary evolution to happen. We can mouthpiece about being progressive and anti-establishment all we want, but oppressed groups, en masse, are asking for support and we’re still using them as punch-line fodder.”

"There’s no denying Australia’s lack of a cultural food identity. I don’t know many meals or ingredients that are uniquely Australian. Most are adopted from English heritage or American influence. There are a plethora of native edibles that we know little about and are hardly used other than in a few modern restaurants, primarily due to how little contact we have or respect we demonstrate to the Indigenous peoples of our country. I believe sharing food is important to human social and evolutionary development and.. maybe.. just maybe we eat too many burgers by ourselves."
