The Naked King is the final chapter in my « King Of Blends » trilogy of mix tapes (the previous instalments are 2016’s 100% RADIO HITS and 2017’s Impressions). I wanted to explore once again the world of blends and giving iconic pop pieces as well as classic underground tunes a new context by layering them with more modern and/or obscure tracks. I wanted it to be about finding beauty in anachronisms and considering time not as a line but as a dot where Squarepusher, Lil Flip, Rod Lee, Lorenzo Senni and Finn’s music are happening simultaneously. I wanted to go against the rules of progression in DJ sets, while maintaining a fluidity that resists tempo and key changes. It is a stream of consciousness that ends up being more informed by the construction of a Lil Wayne verse than the typical temporality of your conservative DJ’s latest techno mix. Every track builds on the flow of the previous one played, but then i realized it went from a jungle track to a Houston rap acapella to a grime beat to an accelerated Miami club track to MF Doom, and i thought it was fine, because it’s all the same music to me and it all makes perfect sense. Lots of tracks are played at the wrong speed, things slow down and accelerate again, and the ride itself, no matter how chaotic, becomes the message. In the year when every one is acting surprised that t’s acceptable again for DJs to « play anything », i wanted to show the world what « play anything » truly means.
