In September 2020, my original composition 'Suite from SINTEL' was selected as a project by the Reddit Symphony Orchestra, a virtual ensemble with players from around the world. Over the following months, over a hundred players recorded and submitted their parts, which were then compiled, mixed, and mastered into an authentic live performance of the suite.

I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and for all the hard work put in by the wonderful members of the RSO community!

This is an original composition from Claire Farrell, a participant from the composition program at National Music Camp.

It is not uncommon for me to find stimuli for my compositions in the natural world. As I looked out my window onto the rugged slopes of kunanyi/Mount Wellington, I drew upon the vastness of Tasmania’s wilderness and the intense feeling of connection it evokes within me. This influence is not intended to be audible in A New Tempest, but rather is used to achieve a sense of space and organic development. The title is directly inspired by gusty winds and a fear of uncertain times ahead, something that seemed very apparent to me at the beginning of December 2019.

With this being my first foray into writing for chamber orchestra, the compositional process became a valuable orchestration exercise. I found particular interest in pairing different instrument families to see what combined effect they could produce. Combinations you will hear in the final work include muted brass and woodwind, and harp and vibraphone.

A New Tempest explores mixed emotions of tension and release, fear and hope, through a variety of textures and timbres. The work is characterised by pulsing rhythmic energy, contrasted by moments of calm, which I hope will inspire reflection among listeners.

Claire Farrell is a Hobart-based composer and recorder player currently studying Honours in composition at the University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music. Her musical style is informed by her love of nature and is characterised by polyphony, pulsing rhythms and musical imagery.

Farrell enjoys working on multidisciplinary projects. In 2018-19 she was commissioned by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) to compose music for the TSO & DRILL (Hobart’s youth dance company) collaboration, NEON. Most recently, she composed music for RANT Art’s multimedia project Soliloquy, presented at the 2019 Junction Arts Festival, Launceston.

As a participant of the 2020 AYO National Music Camp Composition Program, Farrell has been privileged to be mentored by composer Melody Eötvös in developing new compositions for chamber orchestra and string quintet. Her participation was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, which supports the arts in regional and remote Australia.

'A New Tempest' by Claire Farrell

In writing this work, I wished to provide a space for all the members of the string quartet to have soloistic moments, as well as extended melodic passages, so that the whole quartet is involved and at the forefront. The first movement has strong tonal elements, while the second abandons them. Both, however, have a strong emphasis on lyricism and texture, and beyond that a certain affiliation with romanticism. The name comes from the type of wave, which happens to be the medium of sound, but besides also has a certain longingness to it. The standing wave appears in motion but is static in space—likewise there are elements in the quartet that move only within their own realm but remain static in their relation to their surroundings.

Slow Cancellation

Born in 1789 off the south coast of Antarctica, Lilijana Maticevska managed to kill Mozart at the precocious age of 2 before being raised by wolves in the Bavarian forest. Right before Napoleon's rise to power, she was abducted by aliens and cryogenically preserved aboard their UFO until it crash-landed somewhere in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales. She disguised herself as a boy for some years around the turn of the millennium and developed a passion for music to make amends for her terrible murder. As a very distracted and introverted child she was encouraged by her well-meaning primary school music teachers to take up composition, possibly to steer her away from a path to evil. Nowadays, she spends her time composing propaganda songs, fangirling over Wagner and kicking the gender binary's bum into oblivion.

Lili’s music has been performed in Europe, North America and around Australia. Her composition Palimpsest was given its American premiere by JACK Quartet in November, 2019. After its world premiere in Hannover the previous year, she was described in the press as a 'mordlustigen [Australierin]'—a badge she wears with pride. Other recent commissions include 'Electric Revolution' for the esteemed Thereminist Thorwald Jørgensen and the Acacia String Quartet, premiered at the Albury Chamber Music Festival in 2019, Black Cat Sonata for guitarist Harold Gretton, premiered at the Melbourne Guitar Festival that same year.

She has worked as a composer for ensembles and musicians as wide-ranging as Plexus Collective, Ziggy and Miles Johnston, Syzygy Ensemble, Melbourne Women's Choir, ELISION Ensemble and Musica Assoluta (Hannover).
