HERE, TONITE is about taking control of your own life. The lyrics open with 'OK I get it, I start living in the present, I turned up, then came Armageddon'. Referring to the well known irony of finally feeling alright, then your life is turned upside down. It's a reminder to self that 'you are your own creator, pick up the reins and get off the conveyor'.

I want your head held high, I want you here, tonite.

HERE, TONITE

Rona Mac's new single 'Smoke' is a simple, cyclical and melodic song, lyrically driven over a swirling vocal backdrop. Smoke demonstrates Rona's stripped-back style, bringing the song to it's full potential whilst keeping it spacious and painfully raw.

The track is embedded in her rural surroundings, with vocals recorded in a Cathedral bell tower amongst the chatter of crows. It was written during the first lockdown. “I'd manically cleared out and cleaned my caravan, and then sat down thinking 'what the hell do I do now?'. The song ruminates over the many things that make me want to smoke – bad days, wistful moments, nights with my beautiful friends, angst and change.”

After delighting so many with his impressive ‘Good Dog’ EP in September last year, which went onto find support from Jack Saunders (BBC Radio 1) and Zane Lowe (Apple Music 1), as well as being curated on Spotify playlists like ‘Fresh Finds’, ‘Melomania’ and ‘Garden Indie’, fast-rising artist Trunky Juno returns to deliver his first piece of new material for 2022, the vibrant new single ‘Oxford English Dictionary’.

Continuing his venture through the rich and woozy realm of the psych-pop sound, ‘Oxford English Dictionary’ offers up yet another wonderfully infectious delight from the Newcastle native. Brimming with fresh and sun-kissed textures, a sweeping atmosphere, and his own captivating vocals at the helm, he is kicking off the next phase of his career with one of his most loveable offerings to date.

Speaking about the new offering, he said, “I still find it difficult to spell Mississippi, but I did manage to write a fun song. It's a hooky Alt-Pop that will confidently power walk you straight back to the Trunky Superstore for more Trunky. Oxford English Dictionary was one of those tracks that sounded great as soon as I made the demo, lot's of those parts made it into the final version because they're so full of that sense of initial inspiration.”

Behind a well-established moustache and deadpan inclinations, North Eastern indie maverick Trunky Juno resides within his own sphere of off-kilter artistry. Known for his masterful lyricism, warped sounds and bold ideations, the Durham native brings a spritely disposition to the alternative music scene, twisting the mundane into something entertaining. Now backed by a diverse and relatable repertoire, the zany universe of Trunky Juno is beginning its glorious expansion. 

The original dream was to be a Backstreet Boy, a far cry from his current musical positioning. However, in some metaphysical way, we can all agree that Trunky Juno is their sixth unofficial member. Truly a musician who’s done it all, he is a name well-known to his locale having cut his teeth in many a jazz, punk and indie bands. Elsewhere inspired by the 90s slacker rock of Weezer and Beck, as well as the psychedelic tendencies of The Flaming Lips and quirky offerings of Mac Demarco, Trunky Juno finds no better way to spend his time than spinning idiosyncratic tales of our society and the pop culture that engulfs it, covering every corner of our sonic landscape. 

Outside of his attributions to the alternative music scene, Trunky Juno is an avid admirer of all forms of creativity, oft finding beauty in the abstract, be it his deep-rooted love for professional wrestling, 80s horror films or sculpting plasticine expressions onto hard-boiled eggs. He says, “I always wonder what it would be like to hear music without knowing anything about music, and that’s what I like about other art forms. I like that I know nothing about them and I can just appreciate them in a more abstract way without thinking about the gritty details.”

Sydney indie rock three-piece Crystal Cities have made a triumphant return after almost a year-long hiatus. Although that’s not to say they haven't been busy. Lead vocalist and guitarist/keyboardist Geoff Rana has been spending days on end in his self-made studio where he’s been writing, producing and engineering the band’s latest material. Today we get the first taste of said latest material in the form of new single, “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore”. 

While the band’s previous effort - their sophomore album Hold Me Close Hold Me Tight - was an exercise in hard-hitting alternative rock that could rattle a live audience, “Love Don’t live Here Anymore” feels more explorative and colourful. Yes, the signature big anthemic chorus is still there, however this time it feels more personable, more relatable, and more emotive. Rana even tries his hand at a low croon for the song’s verses which will be a pleasant surprise for listeners familiar with their back catalogue. 

"I happened to be going through one of those 'down' moments where giving up music and writing songs seemed like the best option for moving forward with my life... Wild peaks of motivation followed by troughs of listlessness are simply part of the experience of being a creative person struggling to find some semblance of success in an ever-changing world... Ironically, it was when I was feeling at my lowest that I happened to sit down with my guitar and start strumming the opening chords for ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’.

It was through this song that I found myself reuniting with why I write songs and why I love it so much. ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’ is about the experience of losing something or someone you once loved and then the joy you get from reconnecting with, or rediscovering that something or someone."

The song also features the band’s newest member, Neel Shukla. Shukla replaces previous drummer Daniel Conte who has performed on all the band’s previous work. 

Long-time Crystal Cities collaborator Paul Lani (David Bowie, Prince) was once again tapped to handle mixing and mastering duties for the recording.

SInce the band’s formation in 2016 they have released a highly praised EP - Who’s Gonna Save Us Now (2017) - and two critically acclaimed albums - Under The Cold Light of the Moon (2019) and Hold Me Close Hold Me Tight (2021). 

The band consists of Geoff Rana (lead vocals, guitar, keys), Jared King (Bass, backing vocals), and newest member, Neel Shukla (Drums).
