In Erik Erikson's last Psychosocial Stage of Development he describes how people at the end of their lifespan tend to either meet death with a sense of integrity and a sense of statisfaction with your choices and actions. Or with despair, regretting everything you always said you'd do but never did.

In Ericksons' 7th stage: Life is often coloured either by Productivity/Generativity or Stagnation. Will you take a huge risk and take a giant leap towards the unknown, or stagnate into routines, doing the same thing over and over.

Once you've lived the majority of your life, let's say 40-70s all those days you did the same thing melt together (especially if you have no children). That regret you feel when looking back at your life unable to pinpoint what exactly you did or what all that work was for is what I believe is the despair.

3. Middle Age - Productivity Or Stagnation

Eriksons 6th stage brings us to where I and probably 90% soundcloud creators/listeners are. In this category are people between the age of 18-39. Here you'll find millenials and snowflakes alike all trying to find intimacy, either through friendship or companionship.

2. Early Adulthood - Intimacy Or Isolation

Between age 5 and 18 you'll find stages 4 & 5. In stage 4, during childhood you'll either use your newfound autonomy to develop a sense of competence. Alternatively if you're met with disappointment after disappointment you'll be left with a sense of inferiority. 

In stage 5, during adolescence (about 12-18) life is more about conforming, fitting in and discovering yourself. But not everyone is able to identify with a role and find your place in society. In these days of the internet and identity politics kids grow up with much more alternatives and diverse role models than previous generations. Who knows if it's a blessing or a curse.
