I went to a random mid-week show at the M Bar in Hollywood sometime in 2003 or 04 and walked in to find a redheaded girl with a giant sparkly guitar just crying her eyes out from the side of the stage while the room sat in absolute silence. It took me a minute to realize that she was actually singing - this was just part of the song. She fought through song after song, singing, crying, getting louder and quieter, belting it out and banging on that guitar. 

As she loaded off of the stage I asked if she'd like to follow me back to my studio - I wanted to record her NOW. Exactly like she was, no cool down time or whatever would take to get her out of this incredibly emotive and powerful mood that she was in. Her boyfriend jumped right in to the conversation with a NO FUCKING WAY, which is I think the exact thing that made her hop in to my car. 

We drove cross town to my studio where I called ahead and had some mics and amps warmed up. When we arrived, Izzy went in to the iso booth with her guitar and played this set for 3 of us sitting on the couch. 

Over the next week or so I learned all of the songs and called her up to give her a disc of the session and to let her know that I was putting a band together for her. We ended up playing countless shows around LA for years with a revolving cast of characters. No one, including me, could ever keep up with her.

I decided to share these recordings now because they are unique performances that were never again duplicated. The good news is that you can say that about ANY recording of Izzy! For me, they capture that first night and the fearlessness that is Izzy Cox.
