LBJ confronts Richard Nixon over rumors associates of his were advising the South Vietnamese to hold out of peace talks until after the 1968 election. The rumors were true, meaning Nixon and co. were in violation of the Logan Act which criminalizes interference in U.S. government diplomatic negotiations by private citizens. LBJ, in fact, knew Nixon was lying, but never went public with the information so as not to throw the country into chaos or invite attention to his numerous forays into unethical politics. The 2014 Ken Hughes book on this affair, "Chasing Shadows," inspired the song choice, "Chasing Shadows," by The Horrors.

Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev was stateside from June 18-24 1973 for meetings with President Nixon. Brezhnev’s visit occurred a month after the Watergate Committee began televising their hearings, though these were paused in the interests of diplomacy for Brezhnev’s visit. 

This is the final recorded telephone conversation between Kissinger and Nixon during his presidency; Nixon ordered the taping system to be disconnected a month later on July 18 after Alexander Butterfield revealed the system’s existence to the Watergate Committee on July 16. Butterfield's revelation was perhaps the death blow to Nixon's presidency, and is ultimately responsible for these tapes becoming public.

Nixon opens by commenting on Kissinger “unfortunately” not being on stage with himself and Brezhnev. Nixon and Kissinger were notoriously jealous of each other over who received credit for the pair's foreign policy accomplishments.

Note Nixon’s slip calling it a “treaty” as opposed to an “agreement,” which would require congressional authorization. 

They dump on Secretary of State Bill Rogers, who was sidelined for Nixon’s entire presidency by Kissinger in his role as National Security Advisor. Kissinger would later take over Rogers’ role while maintaining his role as National Security Advisor.

With growing risk that he’ll have to resign the presidency, Nixon clings to the notion his personal relationship with Brezhnev is vital to keeping the U.S. and U.S.S.R. out of nuclear war. 

Nixon and Kissinger enjoyed boosting their own accomplishments, but these agreements weren’t terribly significant. In RN: The Memoirs of Richard Nixon, Nixon describes them as “better than nothing” (p. 880-881). The Soviets wanted a treaty on the complete nonuse of nuclear weapons, Nixon thought that would “prevent, or at least inhibit, us from using nuclear weapons in defense of our allies or of our own vital interests.” An admittedly fair interpretation of the word “nonuse.”

LBJ, Advisors Discuss Whether to Make Public Nixon's Treason

Telephone conversation between LBJ and George Smathers, 8/1/1964, 11:00AM. Discussing Barry Goldwater's economic policies as antithetical to the "democratic type philosophy of economics" that made Americans (and America's business leaders) prosperous. Smathers, a Florida Senator known for anti-communism, strategizes with Johnson on how and when he will flip from being against medicare to for it after campaigning against it in 1962, and how it's better not to pass it until after Johnson defeats Goldwater as it'll give older voters a reason to support Johnson.

They discuss the purchase of furniture at Otis Air Force Base and wasteful spending. The recording begins in mid-conversation. Ever sensitive to public opinion, President Kennedy was horrified to open the Washington Post to see a photograph of a navy aide standing next to an expensive new naval project -- a hospital bedroom that had been built at a base on Cape Cod, to be ready in case Jacqueline Kennedy went into labor with their son, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy.

Probably not the best place to be uploading these as far as rights go, and probably not permanent. A few of the basic ideas: These are all songs I love. Slowing sound essentially magnifies it, and so is a great way to hear the details of familiar songs. I also think there's a bit of subjective time-travel, because quickly enough I forget the song is so slowed down while listening to people talk at a normal pace. Or maybe that's just me. Practically, slowing the songs down creates more space for whatever audio I'm mixing into it.
