If there’s one good thing to come out of the Covid Lockdown it’s some
fruitful musical collaborations and a little more time for extra projects
that might never have materialised.  Jimpster and Matt Masters have been
good friends and musical allies for almost 20 years now, since Matt
started helping out at the label back in 2003.  The duo aren’t exactly
strangers in the studio with Jimpster lending his production ear to Matt’s
Never Ending Nights LP which dropped last year, but this is the first time
they’ve joined forces for a full release. We love the way each producer
has bought elements of their own sounds to the three tracks, bringing
something fresh to the table and being pulled outside their comfort zones
in the process.

On title track Dub Come Down we’re treated to a percussive, dubbed out,
live-sounding pass with the space echo being tweaked heavily throughout.
A live bass loop played by Nick Cohen adds a touch of raw ESG vibes to the
track whilst a mutating analogue synth line and sweeping Juno chords add
just enough melody without taking away any of the driving energy from the
rhythm section.

Up next we have Area E3 which works up a crunchy, syncopated groove with a
twisted bassline bouncing around the four four kick drum and claps.
Jamie’s Juno 106 gets a proper workout on this one taking on chord and
stab duties as well as some extra white noise rhythmic elements.

Closing out the release things head deeper with No Normal.  Here the duo
create a sense of widescreen beauty emanating from within the shuffling
groove, lush pads and skipping synth lines.  An intimate, whispering
vocal adds to the otherworldly atmospherics developing into some kind of
hypnotic mantra that transports us from the here and now.

For this rather special milestone we thought what better way than to do as we’ve always done and present a handpicked selection of top quality dancefloor tracks from some of our current favourite producers. Kicking off we have Melbourne’s finest Mic Newman stepping up with Filthy Forever, a raw and pumping high energy track straight out of the MCDE school of disco meets hip hop meets dirty old-school house.
Next up we have Jimpster with a track entitled Cloudwalking - a low slung, swampy and slightly acidic little number complete with trippy warped out vocal samples tailor made for those special moments on the late night floors.
Flip over for The Faint Of Heart by Arithmetics, better known as Matt Masters and Pezzner who collectively deliver a lovely track laden with chiming synth arpeggiations and building pads on top of a deep house groove.

Finally, we have the pièce de résistance in the form of Martin Patiño’s Make Love. This is a very special track which has been raising roofs wherever Martin and Jimpster have been playing it from Johannesburg to Berlin to Tokyo. Layers of ostinato orchestral strings build gradually over the course of the piece getting increasingly intense with the energy levels being hightened further by the lack of any kick drum throughout the entire track teasing the dancefloor into submission. A real classic in the making we feel.

Chord Interrupted is a smooth and deep adventure into a wonderland of samples and synths, harmonics and rhythms. The drive of the tune is never ending and Evren builds amazing soundscapes around the drums and percussions. Pure Deepness!
Matt Masters (Freerange) made a dancing club mix. He knows how to focus on the basics and he never loose the energy. But he made also a moody sunset mix and pitched down the structure for more dreaming relaxing moments. Beautiful!
Pawas is on fire. He shows his capability again to make a remix which remind in the original but he is also dipping the elements into a sea of his well known dubbyness combined with smooth drums programming. Just Pawas!
Pesto´s Jon Silva comes up with two hot and dancing versions. Drive, rhythm and power. On one hand we have a deeper version with the “Bat Country Mix” – a pure deep trip and on the other hand we have an oldschool sounding housey smasher with the “Tahrir Mix”.
Talented and unique..... Evren Ulusoy is a 28 years old Turkish producer and DJ. His musical tastes are quite broad, in 90's Autechre & Warp and other electronic sounds made him buy a computer to start making his own music, then going into clubs led him to do more four to the floor music without loosing sight of sound design. Having been involved in music since his youth and fed from various resources as back catalogue on electronic music, Evren Ulusoy stands out as a producer and DJ not abstaining from innovations and diversifications for the sake of electronic music stage in Turkey... Instead of boxing in a particular category, Evren Ulusoy introduces productions in various styles with his interest and talent in a broad spectrum from electronica to Downtempo.

Matt Masters Exclusive House Addict Mix - April 2014

When Satoshi Tomiie and Hector Romero launched their New York City label Saw Recordings in 2001, they had simple aims.  "The idea was to make an imprint so I could release my original productions, plus introduce new music from up and coming producers," explains Satoshi. "Ultimately, we wanted it to become a home for quality dance music regardless of genre."

In a scene that moves as swiftly as electronic music, it's impressive that a decade on Saw Recordings is exactly what its founders hoped it would be. With a relatively compact discography of 78 releases, the imprint epitomises the mantra, somewhat lost in today's digital music universe, that quality not quantity matters.

As such, Saw has become a champion for new dance music talent. Many of today's most respected underground producers started out on Saw, including Jim Rivers, Guy Gerber, Audiofly’s Anthony Middleton, and Luca Bacchetti.

Even though the label has seen some major changes, including the rise of digital and the fall of vinyl, it has always remained true to its aims. "When we started out 10 years ago, we were pretty much a vinyl label," says Saw's co-founder Hector Romero. "Nowadays we're a digital only label and like everyone else, we've had to change with the times, but we're still about promoting great music and new artists, and building a brand. For us, it was never just about selling music."

Saw Recordings' 10th anniversary release 'Edizione' is a perfect example of the label's continued commitment to new talent. With seven quality club cuts from new and experienced Saw artists, the extended EP is like a gallery for underrated electronic music heroes.

"Many of the producers featured on 'Edizione' are new, and all of them are really hungry to grow and gain exposure," says Hector Romero. "They are Saw's most important artists, and all of them are proper talent with good futures ahead of them."

Satoshi Tomiie came up with the EP's title during a dinner in Rome, as he explains, "We had a great bottle of wine called Edizione, which someone explained, was a mixture of all these various grapes, that when combined, tasted amazing. We had been searching for a title for the 10th anniversary EP, and it just made sense."

Romero oversees A&R duties at Saw and was tasked with finding the tracks for 'Edizione', a process that took about six months. "A&R is what I love to do," he says. "I love sitting at my computer and going through tons of promos and listening to the links that people send me. A&R is about finding that needle in a haystack, and when you do find that needle, it feels great. 

"The haystack is so huge these days of course, but it has to be done. When Satoshi is cooped up in his studio working on music, I spend my time listening to all the promos that we get sent, and I try to respond to every producer who sends us their stuff."

Part of the concept of 'Edizione' was freedom, as Satoshi explains: "Once we had found the producers that we wanted for the EP, we tried to be as open and free as possible. We didn't want to restrict them by giving them a certain sound or feeling to reach in the studio, instead we gave them the freedom to do whatever they wanted for the release."

The resulting record is a melting pot of uncompromising, underground club music. There are moments of techno awe (Toby Tobias), raw house grooves (Mabaan Soul), a punchy progressive/techno hybrid (Doomwork), blissful deep house (Matt Masters), hynotic, acid-infused melodic techno (Matthias Heilbronn and Joeski), and proper, four-to-the-floor NYC house (Mes and Mabaan Soul). 

'Edizione' sums up the label's approach in 2011 perfectly. In fact, it encapsulates Saw Recordings' attitude towards music in general. And as cheesy as it sounds, it is heart warming to know that a decade on it is the label's passion for quality dance music - above all else - that drives it into the future.

Toby Tobias '5AM'
This track was actually produced about three or four years ago. We had always really liked it, but were never sure about when to release it. We got in touch with Toby Tobias to ask it it was still available, and he did a special re-edit which we loved.

It's one of those nice deep tracks that works just as well at an afterhours as it does early on in a set. I knew we had to have it, because there have been multiple times in the past when the track has come on on my iPod, and it was so good, I stopped what I was doing to find out its title.

Matthias Heilbronn, Joeski 'My Fix'
Joeski and Matthias have been around in NYC for a few years now. They're both great DJs, and Matthias is a great house producer. They recently started collaborating on some great music, and 'My Fix' is very old skool Chicago style with spoken words and a very trippy feel.

I fell in love with the track right away. We released this as a single in January, and it did very well so we felt it deserved to be in 'Edizione' too.

 
Mes 'Back To Basics' (Mabaan Soul Remix)
Mabaan Soul were always really into this track, which was originally produced by Satoshi under his Mes alias. They asked if they could have the parts, and their remix turned out really chunky, with a great shuffle groove.

It fitted perfectly with 'Edizione'. Their remix works well on the floor, and Satoshi always gets a big reaction when he plays it out. It went down big time in Guendalina club in Southern Italy last year. 


Luca Bear 'Sierra Leone
Luca Bear is starting to make some big noise, and he's becoming a big Saw artist. He has had stuff out on Viva and other cool underground labels. He's a great DJ too.

He lives in Northern Italy. I really like this mix. It's definitely at forefront of cutting edge house. He just gave us two new tunes too, which we're definitely going to sign. 

Mabaan Soul 'Yo'
Mabaan Soul are a duo from Italy who are young and have a bright future ahead of them. They've had a few releases out on Saw, and they have a very unique sound.

Their music is chunky and raw, with lots of drums and heavy beats, and they sound almost like how Todd Terry used to sound back in the day. This track 'Yo' is very in-your-face, it goes bang, like yo!

Doomwork 'My Crooner
This track has been sitting around for a couple of years with us. It has a little bit of a progressive house and tech house feeling. It's very well produced and quite clean. It's one of my favourite tracks on the release actually.

Doomwork are definitely on the up. We've had them warm up for us at gigs in Italy, and again, they're important artists to Saw. They always let us hear their new stuff first, so we get first pickings on all of their releases.

Matt Masters 'It's Always Delayed'
Matt Masters is one of my favourite producers from London, that's for sure. Matt is a talented guy, and his music is really deep.

His track for 'Edizione' is very well produced. The groove is tech house, and because it's deep, it's suitable for afterhours or starting a DJ set. It's got these lush pad sounds in it, which are perfect for setting the mood of a party.

@matt-masters is a producer who is on a stellar path at the moment, his productions seem to take several steps forward with every single release, which is really saying something as they were insanely good to start off with.

His new single Look What You've Done on @ fredeverything's Lazy Days label is a bit of a masterpiece, as the label says "The bossa rhythm and vocal sample reminds us of Compost’s golden era (think Rainer Trüby/Jazzanova) and Lindstrom’s early 2000 Slow Supreme project". I most certainly agree with that wholeheartedly. This is a future classic, warm, inviting and with a subtle energy which will bring more than a little joy to clued up dancefloors across the globe in the coming months. The release also sees label boss Fred Everything do some serious damage with a deep percussion meets synth workout. Tasty, trippy and very very good.

A couple of weeks back we premiered @matt-masters 'Look What You've Done' on one of our favourite labels Fred Everything's 'Lazy Days'. It was a ridiculously classy slice of deep house fusing a bossa rhythm with deep percussion, liquid synths and a proper ear worm vocal. 

Now Matt is back and determined to one up himself with the equally brilliant 'I've Opened My Eyes'. An entirely different beast it touches on modern soul and Nu Disco. Smooth summer music all day long.

Topping all of this off the label, @fredeverything's Lazy Days, have drafted in the supremely talented Art of Tones (@llorca), an artist who we love here at LV and who continues to delight with every single release. Safe to say that he has delivered yet again, injecting a  large slice of funk into proceedings with hooky guitar licks and an effusive bassline. Full of hope and joy this is exactly what 2023 should sound like.

Dale Howard opens up our 2nd year with a deep and grooving 2 track EP that's full of sounds that are in terms of house music - very deep and garage-influenced. It's a sound which has seen him release on labels such as Neurotraxx Deluxe, Lost My Dog. Off Recordings and Fear Of Flying. Dale has releases also due out over the next few weeks on Noir, Morris Audio and a 2nd EP on Lost My Dog, as well as his own label Static Audio. 

Evan Iff is a new name to some, but his debut EP was released on US label i! Records - which shows that he means business. His remix of Signals, with its 90's style of house / garage vibes, this is one to make you get bumping on the floor. 

Matt Masters needs no introduction, but if he does - I suggest you use google and search for him. He completes the EP with a more deep, groovy and tribal take on Sub Text.

Premiere: Matt Masters - Once Again [Freerange]

Sometimes it takes a while before you finally get the chance to seize your moment. DJ and producer Matt Masters has been working for Freerange for around 15 years, presenting their radio show as well as polishing Jimpster’s hi-hats, washing Manuel Tur’s MIDI files and ensuring that all Freerange releases adhere to EU regulations regarding deepness and houseness. Here we present you with his debut long player ‘Never Ending Nights’. Featuring eleven tracks of precisely engineered house and electronica, the LP is a high-quality, pristine project, as befitting someone who has worked for so long at one of house music’s most revered imprints.  

Matt is proof that dedication pays off: he’s been asking Jimpster if he can put out an album literally every day for the last decade and a half and the Freerange label boss has finally capitulated, and donning his executive A&R cap to finalise the project. Aside from a couple of carefully crafted downtempo tracks, ’Never Ending Nights’ is dancefloor focused but achieves the ultimate goal of the dance music album, possessing enough musicality and interesting production touches to stand up to home listening too. Matt has also thoughtfully included one track that can be used as a DJ incantation to summon up a horde of sentient headphones to do your bidding.  

Perhaps because of the protracted nature of the album’s production, there’s an unhurried confidence to many of these tracks, almost a swagger; big riffs slowly reveal themselves as epic chords unfurl beneath steadily ticking percussion, the assured, contemporary production providing an audio snap-shot of where UK deep house is at in 2019.  

Available as an ethically sourced high-end hand-crafted .wav file, an eco- friendly artisanal mp3 or vinyl for those of pensionable age or students who have just cashed their grant cheque, ‘Never Ending Nights’ demonstrates Matt’s versatility in producing both types of music, tech and house.

Here is another Londoner to keep an eye on! @matt-masters' newest release "Riding High" is an exemple of how deep house can be nicely crafted. It is an extract from is LP called "Never Ending Nights" soon to be available on @jimpster's label @freerangerecords

Starting with some nice drums and a smooth bassline, the track evolve into a cosmic shamanic deep house. It also has a nice subtle jazzy touch, that's really enjoyable.

I just wanted to say a huge thanks yet again for all of the support for the 6th Saveloy Factory Sessions last Saturday. It was lot’s of fun as always!

If there’s one good thing to come out of the Covid lockdown it’s some fruitful musical collaborations and a little more time for extra projects that might never have materialised. Jimpster and Matt Masters have been good friends and musical allies for almost 20 years now, since Matt started helping out at the label back in 2003.

The duo aren’t exactly strangers in the studio with Jimpster lending his production ear to Matt’s Never Ending Nights LP which dropped last year, but this is the first time they’ve joined forces for a full release. We love the way each producer has bought elements of their own sounds to the three tracks, bringing something fresh to the table and being pulled outside their comfort zones in the process.

On title track Dub Come Down we’re treated to a percussive, dubbed out, live-sounding pass with the space echo being tweaked heavily throughout. A live bass loop played by Nick Cohen adds a touch of raw ESG vibes to the track whilst a mutating analogue synth line and sweeping Juno chords add just enough melody without taking away any of the driving energy from the rhythm section.

Up next we have Area E3 which works up a crunchy, syncopated groove with a twisted bassline bouncing around the four four kick drum and claps. Jamie’s Juno 106 gets a proper workout on this one taking on chord and stab duties as well as some extra white noise rhythmic elements.

Closing out the release things head deeper with No Normal. Here the duo create a sense of widescreen beauty emanating from within the shuffling groove, lush pads and skipping synth lines. An intimate, whispering vocal adds to the otherworldly atmospherics developing into some kind of hypnotic mantra that transports us from the here and now.

Finding a love for house music at an early age, Matt Masters started working for Freerange Records in early 2004. Having DJed for several years before that, he decided to spend his first season in Ibiza that summer and gained residencies with two large island promoters as well as securing a residency on the sunset strip and appearing at many venues including the 10,000 people capacity club Privilege. When he returned from the island, Matt was invited to join the Freerange team permanently that year and the label and its artists have played a fundamental part in his musical influences and ambitions.

As a DJ, Matt has played alongside Jimpster, Milton Jackson, Switch, Hipp-E, Palmskin, Mike Monday, Fish Go Deep, Kirk Degiorgio, Shur-I-Kan and more at the London Freerange Records label parties. He has also appeared at various venues and events across the globe including 360 Dubai, The Warm Up South Africa, The Sonar Music Festival Barcelona and the Garden Festival in Croatia with his unique house sound. He has enjoyed a Freerange Records residency at The End, London and also at Horse & Groom, London for his Wayward parties with Norm De Plume. 

In addition to his DJ gigs, Matt hosts the bi -weekly Freerange Records Radioshow with Jimpster. Guests so far have included the likes of DJ Yellow, Stimming, Manoo, D'Play, Salvatore Freda, Manuel Tur, Gorge, Brothers Vibe, Solomun, Jimpster, Roberto Rodriguez, Pezzner, Diesel (X-Press 2), Deetron, Kasper, Nikola Gala, Fred Everything, Tony Lionni, Andreas Saag, Simbad, Nacho Marco, Milton Jackson, Mike Monday, Palmskin Productions, Andrew Crom, Frank Spangler, Trackheadz, Brett Johnson, Shur-I-Kan, Kresy, Hyenah & more. This show is syndicated worldwide on various radio stations including Kiss FM (Australia), Ibiza Sonica 95.2FM (Ibiza), SS Radio (UK), Club FM (Macedonia), Universal Vibes (UK), Proton Radio (USA), Lush Radio (Dubai), Dance Tunes Holland), Sceen FM (Germany), Sweat Lodge (Germany), Dinamo FM (Turkey) & Pulse Radio (Australia). March 2007 saw the release of Brett Johnson's Life in the Emerald City EP which featured Matt's debut remix, a digital exclusive of WeR1 after Matt decided to delve into the world of production. Matt's 2nd remix for Freerange was a re- work of Jimpster's A Love Like This and received airplay on Pete Tong's Essential Selection on Radio 1 when Groove Armada filled in for Pete. Recent artists Matt has remixed since then Dirty Vegas, Pezzner, Onionz, Tony Lionni, Dale Howard, Pablo Fierro, Evren Ulusoy & more.

Matt has worked with MrCenzo under their MidiDropMusic guise on various EP's and remixes. They have enjoyed number 1 and 2 top chart successes on download stores Beatport and Juno whilst working with labels including Glideslope, Guess, Raw Cutz, Shifted Music, Brown Eyed Boyz, Loudeast, 54 Music and Plastic City Records to name a few. He is currently working with Pezzner under their Arithmetics guise on a new EP and have so far had tracks featured on the annual Freerange Records Violet and Grey compilations as well as a remix on Tom Budden’s Alive imprint. 

As for his solo production endeavours, Matt has had success with releases through Urbantorque (4/ 5* in Mixmag Magazine UK), Pack Up And Dance (Number 2 on Beatport deep house chart for several weeks), Metroline (Record Of The Week on Loudeast FM Spain), Dirt Crew, Saw, Beef, Nightbird & more and has been fortunate to have the likes of Milton Jackson and Soul Minority remix his productions. Another alias of Matt’s is Sam Matters (anagram of Mat Masters) where he has enjoyed an EP on Freerange so far as well as remixing Tony Lionni’s Precious. 

In addition to Freerange he works for Delusions Of Grandeur under his Marcelle La Roque guise and they are currently having great success with their down-tempo disco goodies. Matt has been described as “fast becoming a force to be reckoned with” and Jimpster has described some of his productions as “Excellent tracks full of originality and deep, dancefloor friendly loveliness”.
