Deep house staple Axe on Wax are getting us prepped for summer. They’ve enlisted French producer JLMT, real name Jules Pastouché, to curate these breezy transitional vibes as we move on from this rainy Spring (at least here in Canada) to sunnier times. JLMT has had a few things out in the past, mainly a more jackin’ EP on L’Isérois and a couple of edits that have garnered some success. We’re pretty sure he also produced “Swoazy” on Groovence Records, which was listed as an unknown artist and is closest in vibe to what we’re presenting here today.

You’d be forgiven if you heard the EP and mistook the sound to be of Canadian origin. The lead synths, particularly on our premiere today and the A1, Coconut Trees, are reminiscent of earlier Project Pablo works. The chords are warm and mellow, perhaps reminding some of Vancouver’s Jack J and his solo work. The groove is steady and complements the melodic work, with a bit of French touch filtering going on just to remind us that this producer is indeed from France.

The rest of the EP is great as well and comes with remixes from Laurence Guy and Real J, but our pick is the A1 as it has us prepping for those daytime summer jams. Be sure to pre-order your copy and be prepared to hear this one become an ear worm this summer.

“Sounds that channel dubby echoes from Norwegian forests through modern Techno rhythms” is a perfect description of Karoline Hegrenes’ musical identity Karolinski. Making a deep impression in the Scandinavian music firmament for several years now in the form of producer, label owner, DJ and live performer, Karolinski has managed to transport herself and her music from a rural Norway hamlet just outside of Bergen to Oslo and beyond into Europe. “I’m a Supergirl 01” from her debut album “Abnormal Soundscape” (released through her FJORDFJELLOGDALER label) first landed Karolinski on our radar in 2018. Shifting the boundaries between dub techno and downtempo house. At once euphoric and jackin’ but also entirely colossal. 

The Jaeger Oslo resident’s new full length outing “for akasha” finds the Northern European artist once again scaling the heights of arctic techno and IDM. The head nod vibe is still there but Karolinski treks fresh terrain here - going from magical modular techno faerytales into places entirely introspective and cerebral. In parts playful, others dreamy. A glacial movement drifting through the entire album. Layers of glistening synthesis rise and disappear, collapsing on themselves while dub filtered vocals vibrate and dance amongst sharp footwerk rhythms, industrial snares falling like droplets from hanging icicles. This is music to dance into at the dawn of a day consisting of 24 hour sunlight. Warm up to the Karolinski vibe.

"While working a few months in Japan, I was quite shocked by how much the people work over there. Most of the workers come back home, sleep in the subway, exhausted by their 10 hours long workday. Overworking is highly toxic, it is a disease.
