The first time I ever heard “Just a friend” by Biz Markie was on Much Music. It came on and I missed the beginning so I had no idea who it was? My head instantly starting bopping and I knew I just had to get the song. I remember running to HMV (yes they were still around lol) and reciting lyrics back to the people behind the counter (as I didn’t know the artists name?) It was hilarious, but I eventually found out it was Biz Markie and I got the album on the spot! 

Since that day I have always wanted to do a cover of that song but I have always been nervous too. To me, the version Biz Markie did was perfect! But, with a little encouragement, I mustered up the courage and decided to give the song a try….I decided to just have fun, not take myself seriously and go for it! I had a blast recording this and filming it….

I know this is the wrong way to start but I find it incredibly hard to write biographically about myself. I don’t feel that my life is so fascinating that you would want to read about it so normally I would try to deflect and put that attention elsewhere but since that’s not going to happen, here’s me.

My story is unique and yes there are a lot of stories that might vaguely sound like mine but, there’s no one that shares the story of my life like I do. My story is one of love and of loss, of working hard and falling short, of the highest highs and the lowest lows, of broken hearts, empathy and of spilt tea. My stories are like road trips that have no map to follow but somehow I’ve found life along the journey. My songs are made up of those life’s stories and connect in a way that sometimes, if I’ve done it right, only the heart understands.

I love music and always have. I started singing and writing songs at a very early age and although my songs sucked, they paved the way and opened up many opportunities for me. I sang in church, at coffee shops, at skateboard parks and local festivals. It was then I began to realize that my high school teacher that said “I couldn’t earn a living as a musician” was wrong!

I have a rule when I write, “Write from my heart and not from my head”. So what do I get when I follow this rule? I get songs that are written from the deepest place in my heart. So deep, that often I can’t put to words what I am feeling and I struggle to try and explain the meanings behind each song.

I had been writing songs for my solo album for a very long time but since I was touring with the band YUCA (I am their lead singer), the songs just slept comfortably in the back of my heart. They have taken on a few different manifestations to become what they are today – 10 unique stories from my heart.

“Shadows of the moon” is a collection of 10 songs written from a very special place in my heart. The title track was one of the first songs I ever wrote with my little girl and one of the first songs she could sing to me word for word. It’s why I chose that song as the first single and why I chose that title for the album. It means a lot to me.

I’m not in my teens or 20’s anymore and even saying that I never wrote the typical love songs that are cliché and passé but, I did fall in love with my best friend and I do know what true love is. The reason I say this is because there are real love songs on this album, there are songs of inner reflections and songs of pure joy. To me, my hope is you’ll feel the music deep inside you. That’s it.
