This is something for my listeners in Houston. They're the city that's constantly showing me love and June 27th is basically a national holiday for the city. This is a tribute to the late DJ Screw, Pimp C, Big Moe, the Screwed Up Click, Swisha House, etc. No other metal / rock artist has done a chopped & screwed album (with the exception of Korn) so I wanted to bring something different to the genre. This is meant to combine my love of screw, Metal, AND [adult swim].

Mid-2020 I had bought myself a starter recording set up. It was the first time I took an honest jab at recording my own music. My creativity flourished and unlocked a side of my writing that I haven’t fully tapped into. The initial goal was to write 20 songs. Any style. Didn’t matter as long as they were fully composed songs. The Misery is Mine was one of those original 20. 

It’s a poke at my love for prog rock, particularly anything touched by Steven Wilson (hence the obnoxious amount of Logic’s mellotron on here). A song about introspection, feeling a pain only you know and understand coupled with the apprehension that comes from letting people in. It’s all overtly dramatic. It’s what I love to write about despite however corny it may come off. 

This song is seeing the light of day for an undetermined amount of time. A close friend of mine who recently took his own life (10/08/24) shared an affinity for all things prog especially Porcupine Tree - with me. The band that sparked the beginnings of a 15-year friendship. He wasn’t a musician by any means but he always wanted to be a singer or be proficient on any instrument. He had the love for the craft and anything that deemed worth listening to. 

More times than often we would talk about starting a band in jest. But once you say it enough times you begin to believe there’s something there to be actually wanted. We never did make a band but I wrote this song back in 2020 and immediately had him in mind, behind the microphone, doing his thing, crafting lyrics that he more than likely had stored in the back of his mind. To create an outlet for him to pour his soul into. I knew he had it in him and I can only imagine or maybe dream of what he would’ve sounded like on a recording. 

So, this song is and has always been for him. 

And maybe when I’m feeling up to it I’ll re-record this song  - but for now here it is in all its raw demo power.
