IMF Favorites (December 2019)

An homage to Reverend George Engleheart, who lived a dual career as the vicar of an ancient English church and one of the preeminent daffodil breeders of the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Daffodils Before Church

I can just see him, up at dawn
On his way to the fields when,
Like a second thought,
A sign on the door on Sunday morn
“Sorry no service here today;
The daffodils have called me away”

No sermons remain for his fans to read
For daffodils were his legacy
He’s in the book so many times
The patron of the ‘poeticus’ line
						
I learned his name in my teens
Working in the daffodil fields
They were the first thing I really wanted to study
And he was big in the book of names

In spring flower season, I worked on Sunday
Talking to the people with admission money
Didn’t know I was on a lifetime-search
But I sure was glad to be excused from church
							
Whenever I could, I was out in the flowers
My favorites were the type he loved
Well, I was no poet in those days
But he was shaping my future ways

I just want to thank him for his lifetime work
