We discuss his most recent EP for Injazero, Samurais and the cello in this insightful interview into this young composer's creative process.

Matt Emery recomposes IDLES raucous and adrenaline fuelled single ‘Never Fight A Man With A Perm’ which sees the track transformed into a heart wrenching bed of strings. The pounding drums and bass are replaced with plucked cello, and the frantic guitars and vocals turned into hypnotic and poignant lines performed by Fraser Bowles. The strings blossom into a triumphant chorus portraying singer Joe Talbot’s exuberant screams. Idles are a band that Emery has admired for many years even sharing a stage with them back when he toured as a drummer in his previous band.

W for Waves’ is made up of layers and loops of harp phrases and like its name each loop acts like a new wave entering the piece, with lead lines, arpeggios, staccato bass lines, trills and flourishes. The track builds into a complete wash of harp euphoria containing 8 layers of harp ending in real waves recorded in Brighton after Emery’s first post lockdown venture out of London in the Summer of 2020. 

The piece is the first single from Matt's upcoming EP 'Spotlight Series: Harp' performed by Royal Philharmonic Trailblazer Award Winning Harpist Olivia Jageurs.

The Full EP 'Spotlight Series: Harp' is out on Matreya Records March 11th.

Lagoon Nebula is a harp piece which takes it's name from both water and space. It has a calm and dream like feel which flows and gathers intricate layers that build up like many ripples in the water or stars gleaming scattered throughout the clouds of gas and dust in the night sky. Lagoon Nebula was performed by Olivia Jageurs known for her work with the likes of Max Richter, Erland Cooper and Voces8 and Mixed by James Kenosha who has produced records for artists such as Cian Ducrot and Rhodes. Lagoon Nebula is released by Bigo & Twigetti Records on 17th November and an Ambient Remix by Steve Gibbs will follow on 1st of December.

Dream To Dare (featuring Sleeping At Last)

‘Dream To Dare’ is an intimate and emotive piece that features the beautiful vocals of singer songwriter and composer Sleeping At Last (the moniker of Ryan O’Neal). Ryan’s music has captivated a loyal fan base worldwide and his music features regularly on Film and Tv Soundtracks including the likes of The Twilight Saga, Grey’s Anatomy and American Idol to name a few. The track is about believing in our youth and inspiring them to follow their dreams with a loving and open heart. Matt has just supported Sleeping At Last on his recent sold out UK tour where they got the chance to perform this song together each night at Manchester Albert Hall, Bristol St Georges and Glasgow Óran Mór.

Dream To Dare (feat Sleeping At Last)

Adrenaline Influx is a piece of contrasting characters. You have the grand, flowing string choruses paired with the staccato and energy fuelled piano verses which Matt says were inspired by his love of 90’s dance music; “I wanted to write something influenced by the French House piano lines I grew up listening to and work them into a more modern classical world. This is a sound I have explored further in future pieces of music yet to be released’. The track also featured as the theme tune to The Contemplative Podcast in conjunction with Headphone Commute which Matt presents and produces, where he speaks to other composers and songwriters such as Joep Beving, Nanita Desai, Hannah Peel, SYML and Matthew Hallsal. The album also features a Full Band Version of Adrenaline Influx that features additional choral arrangement, synths and drums performed by Matt. The track has a music video which features the former European yo-yo champion.

Matt Emery is a pianist, composer and string arranger based in London and Surrey whose music spans across modern classical to minimalism and ambient. Matt is a British composer who has emerged with a flourish over the last few years, describing his music as "Classical Dream Pop" he has been critically praised for his musical integrity and output which has most recently seen him release an album on Injazero. The label has acted as a safe haven for those which dabble between the abstract, the experimental, electronic and classical music - it makes a perfect fit for the singular and wide ranging approach Matt Emery has applied to his musical expression. There is an element of intrigue as to what might come next for the up and coming musician but we feel excited by the prospect of a new avenue...

As a result we invited him to contribute to our Monday mix series, an ambient focussed affair. He picks music by the likes of Throwing Snow, Jon Hopkins, Max Cooper and even delivers an exclusive rendition of one of his own tracks.

Matt Emery: The 'Monday Is Okay' Mix

London-based Matt Emery is mostly known for his solo piano pieces, which are delicate, nostalgic, and a little bit sad. Last year (right about this time), Emery released his debut on Injazero Records, titled Empire, which immediately shot up to my top piano records, and inevitably made it on the Best of the Year lists, in the "Music For Watching The Snow Slowly Fall In The Moonlight" entry. Emery also shared his selections with us on his Eternal Bliss mix, put together exclusively for the Headphone Commute Podcast. This Friday, September 7th, the composer returns with a new single, titled “I Put a Flame in Your Heart”. I’ll leave the full band version and the edit for you to discover in all due time, but today I wanted to share this very special Vessels remix, premiering on these pages alone.

As you can hear from this piece (and the remix itself), we’re now in a more gritty territory, with percussive and electronic treatments to the track that puts it more alongside Jon Hopkins, Kiasmos, and Moderat, rather than the softer side of Nils Frahm, and even with the up-front expedient vocals, the track ticks all of the right boxes for this fan and follower. Speaking of which, I’ve witnessed Emery sing during his sold-out live performance (on the very last track) and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of his voice [which you will hear clearly on the “Vocal Edit” of the release], and that’s a rare event for me notice, as I’m mostly an instrumental kind of fiend.

The single features a piano-only original of the piece, alongside a more post-rock[y] epic edit, which showcases the versatility of this UK artist. “The full band version sees Emery’s music swell with frantic drums, throbbing synths and a full choir culminating in an expansive interpretation, more aggressive in comparison to his gentle and intricate modern classical piano and string repertoire.” A very nice rework of the original, with the “Vessels Remix”, definitely hitting the spot.

Once again, the single is out this Friday, September 7th, 2018, on Injazero Records, available on all of your favourite digital platforms.

Spring of 2021 is off to a good start! Well, at least when it comes to beautiful music that I love to feature on Headphone Commute! This week has already been full of introductions, announcements, and exciting premieres! And today is no exception! In fact, it’s the highlight of my week, as I’ve been awaiting to share this release with you for almost a month now. “Anxiety Mist” is an opening piece from Matt Emery‘s upcoming six-track EP on Injazero Records, titled Spotlight Series : Cello, and it holds no prisoners! As you may have already glimpsed from the title, Emerie intends to release a series of recordings, focusing on an individual instrument for each one – with the opener prominently featuring the cello. In addition to showcasing the virtuosity, tonal range, and timbre-rich textures of each one, there is also a story with each release. Perhaps the album cover [and my tongue-in-cheek pun of mentioning ‘prisoners’ above] gives away the theme of this first entry, as the dark, intense, and cinematic climax of this piece retells a story of a samurai preparing for a battle. Anxiety is at the core of rising tones, increasing tension in dynamics as if performed in one big breath until exhale brings on comfort.

Opener ‘Anxiety Mist’ is made up of fifteen individually-performed lines, its core revolving around a rising glissando figure, eventually accompanied with lush, building harmonies and punctuated by stabs and erratic higher melodies that paint the picture of warriors waiting in line amid the mist, a thunderous charge into battle forebodingly imminent.
