Escobar Opera

This scene occurs near the beginning of the opera, immediately after the assassination of presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galán (an act that was perpetrated by Pablo's Medellín Cartel). Gustavo, Pablo’s cousin and right-hand man, frantically enters and informs Pablo that the government knows about the Medellín Cartel’s involvement with the assassination. Because of this, the government has formed a search bloc to capture Pablo. Unperturbed, Pablo sings a defiant aria (“Basta Gustavo”), telling Gustavo not to worry, and boasting about the strength of his cartel. This excerpt is a love duet between Pablo Escobar and his wife Maria Victoria “Tata.” Tata, tired of constantly being on the run, is angry at Pablo for not having an exit plan from his life of crime. Pablo woos her by offering her empty promises, insisting that her dream of living a peaceful life on a ‘beautiful hacienda’ will one day come true. This excerpt, titled “The Newsroom Aria," is the first aria of the opera. It is sung by the famed reporter Diana Turbay, and serves as breaking news coverage of the Galán assassination. Diana Turbay, singing into a camera, delivers a live newscast of the unfortunate event. (Micaela Aldridge as Diana Turbay, Matteo Neri on piano).
