In the first episode of the Matters of Mind podcast, we talk to author of The Recovery Letters, James Withey - a collection of letters addressed to people who are still struggling with depression from those who have recovered.

James shares his own lived experience that was the inspiration behind the book and reads his own letter, the first in a series of excepts that will bookend each Matters of Mind episode this series.

001- James Withey (The Recovery Letters)

Professor Graham Thornicroft is a consultant psychiatrist at the South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM)and professor of Community Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), Kings College. He is also a published author and received a knighthood in the 2017 Queen's Birthday Honours for his services to mental health. 

Graham discusses topics in his most well-known book 'Shunned: Discrimination Against People with Mental Illness', which explores stigma, specifically changes in attitudes and the law in recent years that have helped to address this issue. He also brings to light areas where progress must still be made in order to end discrimination once and for all.

002 - Professor Graham Thornicroft

Jon Gee is a psychotherapist, yoga teacher and mindfulness instructor who developed and delivers a one-of-a-kind group, Yoga Share. This South London based group is part yoga class, part peer support group for individuals experiencing psychosis. 

Jon shares how he developed this approach to working with psychosis and explains what happens in a typical Yoga Share session.

003 - Jon Gee (Yoga Share)

Eugene Ellis is a psychotherapist and founder of the Black, African and Asian Therapy Network (BAATN). In this episode we talk to Eugene about the inequality of access to appropriate psychological services experienced by members of Black, African, Asian and Carribean communities, and learn about how his organisation is working to improve representation within the therapy profession. We also hear about some of the different approaches that Eugene incorporates into his own practice such as Integrative Arts therapy.

Jack Nathan is a consultant psychotherapist at the South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. He works within the Lambeth Psychotherapy Service and also for the Trust's Self Harm Outpatient Service (SHOPS). In this episode, Jack talks to us about some of the psychological processes that lie behind self-harming behaviours, and how his approach to working with patients that harm themselves has developed over the course of his career.
