Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. No one in particular is renowned for that cliched statement, but when something is so universal, who cares who said it? And is there anything more nostalgia inciting than a blurry film, bursting with colours but aged just perfectly so that you know, it's from a past which will never return. Het Jaarronde, a 1977 short film by Dutch amateur filmmaker Jan van Keulen is a picture perfect study of Dutch rural life. Filmed at an observer's distance it, as the title states, follows the Netherland's throughout the year. It's not bombastic and grand like 1967's John Fernhout film, Sky Over Holland. Instead it's modest, even shy, as if afraid to document too much because to document means to acknowledge change and loss. 

For the second time, Nous'klaer and The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision's RE:VIVE initiative have teamed up for a split 12" featuring two new film scores of Nous'klaer staple, Mattheis and newcomer Ranie Ribeiro. Each artist was given half the film to compose for, resulting in two sonically disparate pieces that are emotionally twinned. Mattheis offers a lush, heart melting wave of pianos and synths and field recordings to appease his own inner-nostalgia, as the images struck an immediate chord with his childhood and youth in Goeree Overflakkee, South-Holland. 

Ranie Ribeiro, known under his solo moniker for his slamming chopped beats and earlier club oriented releases as D-Ribeiro unveils his talents as a harpist for the first time. His work, is an encapsulation of a calm autumn day. A work in the present rather than a reflection on the past. But as the day fades into night, one can't wish for it to stay, just a little bit longer, because who knows what tomorrow is going to bring?

Heatstroke alert! To celebrate the summer, Utrecht based record label Something Happening, Somewhere decided to release no less than three digital compilations in the coming weeks. Celebrate the summer with SoHaSo.

Part one of the summer series contains four tracks. We asked those involved to look back on their contributions in their own words.

Eefje De Visser & Nuno Dos Santos - Wit Blad (Mattheis Remix)
Nuno: "This track is almost four years old and was only available on vinyl. Now it's available digitally for the first time. Our dear friend Mattheis remixed Wit Blad and gave it a strong hypnotic vibe. It contains those Mattheis' trademark synth swirls. Soothing and driving with spine-tingling harmonics slowly creeping in and out."

Wanderist - Under The North Sea (1 half of Dam Swindle) "This is the sort of dubby non-dance electronica that I love to make", says Wanderist. "Tracks like these exist in a world of their own and let the listener slowly drift away into whatever vibe they feel coming up. The track feels completely effortless and at ease with itself; traits that I also value very much in the people close to me."

Luuk van Dijk - Many Moons
Luuk: "I was listening to a podcast with DJ Benny Rodrigues and he mentioned a tune from E-Dancer, a track that had inspired him in the past. Then I listened to that tune and thought wooooooow, I want to make this kind of shit too. Then I started jamming and improvising in the studio. Many Moons was recorded in one take."

Melon - She Was
Melon: "I made this many moons ago with emotions of a forbidden love between two star signs who didn't connect because of being opposites in needs of compassion. They say opposites attract. I guess it does but not in the long run."

'Protect The Revolution' taken from 'Intercepts', a split album between Pye Corner Audio and Not Waving. 

Taking inspiration from the world of espionage, most specifically spy rings, both artists provide four tracks each, creating a thrilling musical call and response between these kindred producers.

Some of the world’s greatest espionage stories involve Spy Rings. From the Rosenbergs to the Cambridge Five and the Duquesne case, these are stories that haunt the annals of the covert world and remain shrouded in mystery and fascination to this day.

Clandestine spirits permeate these eight tracks of dreamlike industrial techno, impressionist synth burbles, fragmented post-modern ambient and cosmic sci-fi adventure.

Konduku - Orbu - Nous'klaer K3 (previews)

with RV8, the osaka-based producer and musician AOKI takamasa continues his long- term project that focuses on the modulation of rhythms and grooves. it began with his first ep ‚rhythm variations‘ in 2009, released as part three of the unun-series. besides his collaboration with raster-noton, he released records on several labels like commmons, progressive form and op.disc, produced remixes for well-known musicians like ryuichi sakamoto or yoshihiro hanno and played performances at, for example, elektra/montreal and club transmediale/ berlin, all in all making him a renowned producer in japan and beyond.

starting with a firework of bleeps and bops, already the very first minutes of his new record reveal aoki‘s preference for vibrating beats and likewise his playful approach to music, generating a sound that is aiming at the dance floor.

like the first ones, almost all tracks of the record are characterized by a constant modulation of chords and lines that sometimes appears somehow hyperactive, but nevertheless results in a natural flow that perfectly reflects AOKI‘s laid-back attitude combined with his will to produce danceable and funky music.

the fluent arrangement is only interrupted by the third track which forms a caesura by being more reduced and slower. in contrast to this, the following tracks present a faster tempo and an increased intensity; and whereas the first tracks reflect downbeat and r‘n‘b influences due to their broken beats and chunky sound, the later songs are characterized by a more sleek and technoid style, incorporating dribbling basses, clappy sounding snares and modulated voice snippets.

although all of the musical components are constantly broken down, modulated, and rearranged, the overall sound of the record is dense and compact, featuring a groove made up of numerous elements that are complexly intertwined. the eight tracks of the record fit seamlessly together and create a composition that nearly functions like a dj set.

the album was mastered by yoshinori sunahara. needless to say that RV8 will be released as cd and lp.

Giving the “musical journey” a proper host, Mattheis’ absorbing Techno adequately defines how the road not taken can somehow dodge the (exhausted) cliches. Methodical and even-tempo, his exquisite sound employs muddled bass vibrations with crisp tonal presentations. Mattheis' soundscape is as unique as untouched terrain. His fidelity seems to pleasantly pull from his Rotterdam landscapes, from industry to rolling fields of green. In his case, the best of these properties coalesces with personal inspirations to create a tangible opus. Mattheis is musically involved around the clock, as an artist by day and tech enthusiast by night. He discusses with Torture the Artist how productivity can reach its height when space is made for creative freedoms and his current release: Lettre Ouverte. Similar to his other work, his hour-long art:cast encompasses a meditative stroll that exudes dynamism via serenity and vitality. However, the truth of Mattheis’ poetic composition is slammed through his ambient experimentations and atmospheric personifications.
