"You're going to get yourself fired," Lisa Park says, not for the first time, as she watches Jordan sketch circuit diagrams on his lunch napkin. Lisa, from HR, has adopted Jordan as a project—someone to save from himself.

"It's just a hobby," Jordan replies, but his eyes don't leave the diagram. He's designing an adaptive response system for automotive AI, something that could learn from driver behavior and optimize performance in real-time. Not for Meridian—never for Meridian—but for the side business he runs from his apartment.

"A hobby that has you falling asleep in status meetings," Lisa counters. 

She means well, but she doesn't understand. How could she? Lisa found her calling in human resources, in the delicate dance of corporate policy and personal development. She fits here in a way Jordan never will.

"Did you know," Jordan says, changing the subject but not really, "that modern vehicles have over 100 million lines of code? More than a fighter jet. But we treat them like dumb machines, wasting all that computational potential."

Lisa sighs. "And you want to unlock that potential."

"I want to give them the ability to learn," Jordan corrects. "Not just respond to inputs, but actually evolve, improve, become better partners for their drivers."

"Partners," Lisa repeats, skeptical. "They're cars, Jordan."

"They're possibilities," he insists, then catches himself. This passion, this fire—it has no place in the Meridian cafeteria. He folds the napkin carefully, tucking it into his pocket with the dozen others that form his real work, his true calling.
