About “Something in the Way”

We are excited to announce that Palberta's new single, "Something in the Way," will be out on 8/5. Since the release of the acclaimed Roach Goin' Down, Ani, Lily, and Nina have been busy touring the U.S., releasing a live benefit album and opening for Bikini Kill at Brooklyn Steel. All the while, they have been writing and perfecting new songs, a few of which entered the band's sets before the global pandemic shut live music down and postponed their first U.K./Europe tour, originally scheduled for April.   

"Something in the Way" marks the first Palberta release tracked in a professional studio environment. They found a great recording partnership with Matt Labozza (Palm, Shimmer) and took easily to putting down their new material in a studio setting while still experimenting with song-structure, as they do on the outro of "Something in the Way," a repeating motif from John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." 

The recording of "Something in the Way" achieves a clarity not heard on past Palberta releases. From the harmony vocals to the guitars that chime and caterwaul, Palberta's singular sound is brought into focus in Matt Labozza's recording. Below are some words from the band about how the song came to be and what it means to them.

About "Something in the Way" from Palberta 

"Something in the Way" started as many Palberta songs do, with one person playing a drum, guitar, or bass riff and then the other two building off of that initial feeling. As usual, we frantically but carefully guided each other to the end of the song. When we got there, we found ourselves fading into a tricked-out looped fragment of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." Coltrane's melody has a direct connection for us to our beautiful friend Pablo Ramirez, who passed in 2019. His view on life—"LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL LIFE IS IN COLOR LIFE IS A W A Y"—impacted us all in such a positive way, and his beauty and genuine LOVE of life lives on through the thousands of people that he blessed through meeting. We dedicate this song to Psplifff and his mother, the amazing Mammasplifff, and all the beautiful people on the right side of history showing up right now. We love you! - Palberta

Once You Get Down

New York-based record label Youngbloods presents "The Willows": the second single release from Israeli singer, songwriter, and film composer Zoe Polanski's forthcoming full-length "Violent Flowers".

"The Willows is a loose, "stream of consciousness"-style journey log in which I express some recollections from a trip I made to the US a few years back, following up on a relationship that started in Tel Aviv. The first stop of the trip was The Willows Hotel in Chicago, then I went down south all the way to New Orleans. Being far away from home, but also in a state of intimacy, I felt I was drifting through a strange adventure.

It took us a while to find the right groove for this one. Eventually Aviad, the project's producer, came up with a beat that sounded to us like the echo of a far away, slow motion dance floor, and we felt it sat perfectly with the basic loop and bass progression. He also created a synth out of fog horns which got us super excited, and a big question we had was whether to have it open the song, or to keep the opening minimal with just the original loop. We ended up using it only later in the song, and instead, Aviad mixed in a sound of a pistol fire, as if to start the race and animate the first line of the song with a sonic metaphor."

Violent Flowers" will be printed on limited edition 12” vinyl LP and released across digital channels worldwide on July 17th, 2020.

Hier nun ein weiterer Titel der mysteriösen Charlie Keller. Die Restaurierung des Tonbandes gestaltete sich denkbar schwierig, so musste das Band etwa gebacken werden. Um so mehr freuen wir uns nach der Kosmonauten-Ode »Ich, Sigmund Jähn« nun weiteres Werk aus dem Oeuvre Kellers präsentieren zu können: »Die Ballade von der Überlgenheit der sozialistischen Wissenschaft«.
Lasziv haucht die Keller in diesem Lied über große sozialistische Errungenschaften: Über den ersten künstlichen Erdtrabanten „Sputnik“, über den Teilchenbeschleuniger Synchrophasotron und über die erste Herztransplantation. Diese wurde nämlich nicht vom südafrikanischen Imperialisten Christiaan Barnard durchgeführt sondern 1946 von Wladimir Petrowitsch Demichow. Und zwar an einem Hund. Wie auch schon „Ich, Sigmund Jähn“ ist „Die Ballade von der Überlegenheit der sozialistischen Wissenschaft“ AgitProp reinsten Wassers. Obgleich der vermutlich von Vollprofis dargebotene amtliche Pop-Rock auch heute durchaus zu gefallen weiß, fällt es schwer zu glauben, dass die Werktätigen nach Feierabend eine Ballade über Wismut und Kernfusion mitschmettern wollten. Selbst für DDR-Verhältnisse sehr dick aufgetragen. Vielleicht einer der Gründe weshalb dieses Lied bisher nie veröffentlicht wurde?
