Mutability

This is a TSO String Quartet reading session, not a fully rehearsed performance.

String Quartet No. 1 is a two-movement work written for the Toledo Symphony String Quartet reading. The first movement (Reflection) sets a more contemplative and introspective mood. Its slow and pensive unfolding mirrors the way an introvert would process a piece of new information. The second movement (Reaction) has a faster and more excitable temperament, similar to the way in which a more impassioned and extroverted person would respond after hearing troubling news. From mulling-over logically to responding with in-the- moment zeal, String Quartet No. 1 explores the range of human responses to the simple truths we learn every day. This piece is dedicated to my parents for their loving support of my musical education, excellent example of musical passion, and tireless nurturing of my musical curiosity.
