After 6 years of creating sunrise soundtracks from atop the Robot Heart bus, it is a challenge to avoid submitting to a formulaic approach. One of the biggest perks of producing a Robot Heart sunrise is that you can take risks; explore soundscapes and dynamics, knowing that the mystical Deep Playa setting allows for pauses and quiet moments that don’t translate in loud clubs or multi-stage festivals. This year, the set was a journey starting with robots and ending with humans. I wanted the sun to come up to the sound of arguing AI robots. What you heard was a transcript from the actual negotiation between two AI bots at Facebook earlier that summer;

Other than it creating a surreal environment as the sun came up, it also proved a perfect palette cleanser to transition from night into day. The sounds of flutist Claire Chase immediately afterwards set the tone for the 90 minutes to follow. I remembered Robert Miles (we lost him this year) with a beautiful guitar version of his song "Children", and then introduced spiritual emcee and rising star Elliott LaRue. He delivered a chilling live message from the top of the bus about our challenges and responsibilities as humans. And that about summed up the Scumfrog sunrise from 2017. Enjoy the memories!

Larry, you have been a Father to us all… An exceptional visionary who has given us the greatest gift of all - Hope. Hope for a better, more generous, cooperative and creative world. Not only Hope – a real chance to build it, live in it and grow it. You didn’t just give it to us; you were patient enough to teach us how to build this world with you, and for that, we are forever grateful. 
 
You have transcended your work and your dreams because they became our dreams. You have touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who crossed the gates of Black Rock City and never looked back. 
 
This year we will be sad but we will not go through the five stages of grief. We won’t deny, we won’t be angry, we won’t bargain and we won’t be depressed. Instead, we will accept our loss and as we burn the man there will be a faint smile on our lips… because we know that you will see the flames and you will know that your legacy lives on.

Boreal is a camping trip where 300 friends canoe out to an isolated area of the Canadian shield and spend a weekend connecting, frolicking in the water and dancing to music. The twist is that the organizers boat up with a hefty chunk of one of the greatest soundsystems on the planet and we dance until dawn.

This year I was given the first slot, tasked with starting up the party on Saturday night. I walked up to an empty dance floor, devoid of sound except the hum of the generator and the organizers squawking on the walkie talkies. A couple of team members finished setting up the lighting while I got setup. I proceeded to play some favorites from my ambient, intro, downtempo and warmup house crates. As I coaxed more and more people from their post-dinner digestion or post-fun-in-the sun naps, the dance floor built and built. Suddenly the whole party was out in force, and I just kept climbing up the energy ladder to some nasty booty bass tech-house and bassline house… and the fever just kept building until I found myself throwing in just a dash of my hardest techno, breaks, jungle, even drum and bass.

I know that it will be unlikely to find many people who will enjoy this the whole way through, already a few people have told me I lost them halfway… but I think it was worth it to go all over the place. I wanted to give everyone who came out of their tents a little bit of what they love, to charge up for a long night. Rather than post it as two sets I wanted to be true to what happened. I also figure it’s long overdue to have a set online that showcases some diversity because people are still always shocked when I take them on a little voyage.

To be honest, we've been waiting to put this set out ever since we first conceptualized the idea of D Laz playing DH. Damian has been one of our favorite DJs and a constant inspiration for us over the years. He’s the only person we’ve given a 4 hour set to and he turned it into something that went down in history alongside the best sets we’ve ever seen at the fest.

If you were at this years burning man you know how incredible it was. It needs no explanation nor can we explain it in words. You felt the somehow elevated vibe in the air that somehow made every cell in all of our bodies just get in some sort of beautiful flow. This year we made a special edit which you’ll hear at the end of the set made especially for our sunrise set at robot heart. During this moment at sunrise, we all laughed and even cried together. This is what we live for, these moments on top of the Robot Heart bus.
