Love Parade - Access Peace - Berlin Germany - 13-07-2002

The Love Parade (German: Loveparade) was a popular electronic dance music festival and technoparade that originated in 1989 in West Berlin, Germany. It was held annually in Berlin from 1989 to 2003 and in 2006, then from 2007 to 2010 in the Ruhr region. Events scheduled for 2004 and 2005 in Berlin and for 2009 in Bochum were canceled.

On 24 July 2010, a crowd crush at the Love Parade in Duisburg caused the deaths of 21 people, with at least 500 others injured. As a consequence, the organizer of the festival announced that no further Love Parades would be held and that the festival was permanently canceled.

In 2022 the Love Parade was revived under the name Rave The Planet.

I love mixtapes, especially homemade DIY ones. There is a certain charm about them.

For years, dating back to the year 2000, a good friend and I crafted and shared countless mixtapes with each other. It was so much fun and definitely a great way to share and discover new music. It also scratched the itch of us wanting to be DJs—a daydream I still have to this day.

We shared these mixtapes when we met up or we sent them through the post, and it was always so exciting to hear what was in them, which we eagerly discussed once we had.

The surprise element and the homemade aesthetic of these mixtapes are what gave them their magic. They were not super polished, but there was a lot of time and care taken to craft them to make them feel so good.

My friend and I used to go through the racks at our local second-hand record store in our hometown of Romford in the suburbs of London on a Saturday afternoon to find new music for our mixtapes. It was all just for fun, but it kept us going for years. Sometimes we would even include recordings we had made from broadcasted DJ mixes, etc, to weave a rich tapestry of music and other obscure oddities.

We even started to add samples from TV and Film to our tapes, recording directly from the source, and we became the masters of the pause, sample, and unpause technique.

For the first time, I’m sharing the mixtapes I received from that friend, digitally remastered without any editing to preserve them forever - warts and all. Sadly, the mixtapes I gave to him have long gone from his parents’ home. I would have loved to re-listen to them.

I won’t say what is on these mixtapes so you get to experience the surprise element of listening to them for the first time like we did, without the need for fresh batteries in your Walkman and having to rewind and fast-forward to the best parts.

This is the 7th mixtape he made in the series, from the year 2000, 25 years ago!!! - I hope you like it

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

A rare archive of jungle, drum & bass, hip hop, house, techno, and a few other bits.

The name of this collection comes from the time I made these recordings. I was living with my parents in Romford, and I used to record the tapes in my bedroom and then listen back to them in the morning on my commute to work in London’s Soho.

I'm a street photographer by trade, with a love for music.
