Italy’s heavy dub producer Eraldo Bernocchi is not a new face to the scene. Starting out his career in the 90s, Bernocchi produced under many aliases. [...] But it is the works under his real name that deserve the most attention. In 1999 he released Charged with Tashinori Kondo and Bill Laswell. In 2005 he appeared alongside Harold Budd in Music For ‘Fragments From The Inside’ on Sub Rosa. And in 2007 he recorded Manual together with Thomas Fehlmann for 21st Records. There are also numerous EPs with Bill Laswell under Apollo‘s Re-charged series. [...]

Blackfilm, who continues to remain anonymous, is a Hungarian artist that was first introduced to us through his self-titled debut on the now defunct Spectraliquid Records. Since then, the album has been picked up by Denovali Records and repressed in 2010 on compact disc and vinyl. His dark atmospheric soundscapes and a bricolage of modern classical samples and instrumental hip-hop beats reminded me of my favorite works by Amon Tobin and Future Sound of London, for a brooding soundtrack enveloping your mind with heavy fog of penetrating sound. Emanuele is a sound artist from Baia a little coastal town in the Phlegraean Fields in Southern Italy. He has released albums with labels such as Karakoe Kalk, Somnia and Apeginine as well as collaborating with artists such as the Dakota Suite, Dag Rosenqvist and compatriots Enrico Coniglio and Elisa Marzorati. Live performances have seen Emanuele share a stage with artists including Deaf Center, Biosphere, Vladislav Delay, Tim Hecker, Xela, Marsen Jules and Ulrich Schnauss. 

Since the age of 6, he started playing a bontempi organ, a Christmas gift given by his parents before progressing through synthesizers and performing in local bands. With some years spent creating music using a computer, these days, Emanuele’s workflow is returning to his origins of live playing, usually with a synthesizer. His work is now imbued with an acoustic quality, sitting comfortably alongside electronic aesthetics. The natural sounds of field recordings add an almost tangible dimension to his work and it is here, in the outdoors, that his latest album is immersed. 

‘This World’ is a deep and intimate exploration of what our planet and its inhabitants have become today which Emanuele is honest enough to admit, he doesn’t particularly like much of what he sees. Each of these 10 tracks is a reflection of what the world once was not so many years ago and what it is now. The path meanders both memories and present considerations, beginning with sparse, minimal notes to initiate contemplation, before more expansive, lush arrangements take hold as the album progresses. Emanuele narrates a deeply personal account throughout This World, but these tales are both vague and provocative enough for the listener to contemplate the journey for themselves.

Based on the idea of transferring the sound language of Ambient, Minimal Music and Avant-Pop into an orchestral format, Leipzig-based pianist, composer and sound designer Philipp Rumsch founded his own ensemble in 2015. This ensemble consists of twelve artists from Leipzig, Berlin, Dresden and Weimar. Besides the ensemble, they all work in various musical contexts and environments.

Between 2013 and 2020 Philipp Rumsch has studied jazz piano under the aegis of Michael Wollny and Richie Beirach at the Academy of Music and Theatre Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig. In 2016 and 2017 he has refined his sound design and composition capabilities at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen with, among others Niels-Lyhne Løkkegard and August Rosenbaum.

After his last LP reflections (2018), Philipp Rumsch deals on his third Denovali release µ: of anxiety x discernment with the subject of anxiety. Based on his own researches, observations and interviews he made, Rumsch develops a multi-dimensional picture of this complex emotional state. Individual experience dissolves in order to explore a collective perception of this phenomena.

On µ: of anxiety x discernment Philipp Rumsch for the first time uses his self-written texts, but implements also writings by other people, who especially wrote them for the new album. The music of the suite, which consists of two mirror-inverted pieces, adopts different shapes. These shapes range between songs, complex compositions and conceptual improvisation.

For the recording of µ: of anxiety x discernment, Rumsch extended his ensemble by numerous guest artists. The sessions took place at the prestigious Jazzanova Recording Studios in Berlin. In order to achieve an extraordinary listening experience, specialized artificial heads were used to record in binaural stereo. The artwork again has been created in cooperation with Berlin-based Designer Andi Rueckel.

µ: of anxiety x discernment was mastered by Valgeir Sigurðsson (collaborations with Björk, Sigur Ros, Ben Frost, Nico Muhly, Hildur Guðnadóttir et al.) who already was part of the production process of Philipp Rumsch’s Solo-EP A Forward-Facing Review.

In 2018 Philipp Rumsch and his ensemble received the Leipzig award for young jazz musicians, funded by Marion Ermer foundation. The production of µ: of anxiety x discernment has been supported by Initiative Musik gGmbH with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
