A Red, Red Rose

Program Note:

An “afterimage” is an impression of a vivid sensation (especially a visual image) retained after the stimulus has ceased. We most often experience this effect when we look at the sun and then quickly look away, its afterimage both ephemeral and capricious. It occurred to me that this visual phenomenon was a metaphor for memory—how the important moments of our lives are initially like a bright flash of light followed by a gradual fading and changing over time. 

This piece was inspired by that thought: about how our memories—be they of musical styles, of life events, or of personal relationships—fade and change over time, beginning immediately after their initial moment of imprint. I thought of how all the music we hear for the first time is shaped by our memory of all the other music we have ever heard up to that point. I also thought about how new musical genres gradually arise and coalesce from this same collective, ongoing process in the minds of invidual composers and performers. 

As little as we currently understand about the inner workings of the human brain, current research suggests that our memories are altered slightly each time we recall them. Each time a person listens to a piece of music, he or she will experience and understand it as uniquely shaped by this constantly evolving, enigmatic process of memory that we all share.
