Uncleared is the name of my new 29-track instrumental beat-tape. In a more “back-to-basics” approach to beat-making, this tape began as a creative exercise for myself to return to the music that made me who I am. Around Q3/Q4 of 2023 I had read about a “one 4-bar loop a day” regimen to keep output flowing, and this practice was entirely effective in churning-out beats during self-imposed down-time for music making amidst my record label/family balance lifestyle. It was then that I had set a goal to produce & release 40 new beats by the time I turned 40. I found an almost entirely sample-based production flow in Ableton referencing an ongoing list I kept of material to sample & chop as the foundation for the track, culling from the timeless All The Breaks folder for the drums, and finishing the track with a synth bass-line that I’d quickly dial-in & play by hand using Teebs' old M-Audio midi keyboard controller that I am somehow still borrowing and cherish. Most of these beats are under 10 stems in any given project - drastically different in comparison to my projects in the past (Outmind, In My World, Time Flying Beats et al) where stems would be consistently breaching 50+.


Furthermore relating to the title, I was recently served an uncleared sample notice from a bigger label entity. It’s the first time this has happened so I suppose we’ve been lucky, and it’s honestly the first time I’ve reconsidered casually releasing this type of material - particularly on major streaming platforms. I’m not sure what lies ahead for sample-based music culture - but i'm hopeful it will be able to sustain and evolve as we attempt to emphasize the reclamation of the spaces on the internet where this music can be safely & responsibly shared, supported, and appreciated. 


During the last few weeks leading-up to release, artist neighbor / bestie Aaron Raays would come over to my backyard studio shed at night to listen to the developing material and provide me with trusted feedback notes. I have a habit of whip-testing music obsessively in my 2010 Prius driving around Los Angeles, and at the Leaving offices on the Mobius Acoustics system there. These check-ins were crucial in seeing this one through. Only 29 beats made the cut, but I had a lot of fun making these, and I’m having even more fun performing them.

The process and source are Extra and Terrestrial, 
Synthesized, Improvised (Live on Dublab Radio) Meditations. 
Sourced from the well of spiritual expression, these 
recordings were further realized in Ableton. You're flying 
through the mystical world of Gilbert William's cover, 
the software technology is dancing with circuitry, Flute, 
Harp, Hulusi, Water, Sonar, Quasar, and microtonal 
language are Tied and Dyed in the moment.

Heart the Mind can apply our gifts. I asked Matthew 
what he's seen on / in his Mindflights: "Unconditional Love!

"I always wanted to flip this classic Dad Rock cut (honestly I've always loved the cut thanks to my dad!). The original flip I made was pretty fast, probably 140bpm - and I got used to it but after a while I wanted to hear it slower, so I tried some different methods of keeping the original instrumentation and pitch intact, making a tighter edit of the arrangement, and time-stretching the whole thing in ableton from 140bpm to i believe 90bpm (where it is here). The "complex" mode in ableton can compromise a lot of the integral high frequency detail, and so can the VTM plugin I use a lot - *so* to compensate as an experiment post-processing I then very liberally boosted the high frequencies with a large shelf lift probably from 5-10k up, to get that frequency range back to where it originally was except this time introducing artifacts and weird distortion from the time-stretching and VTM plug. Thats the sound here :)

The Green Child is the long distance musical collaboration of Mikey Young and Raven Mahon, who met in 2013 when their bands, Total Control and Grass Widow played a show in Oakland, California. They started writing songs together in Australia in 2014 and the project has been on a slow burn since. Their self-titled debut album is the culmination of few years of putting ideas together internationally and periodically recording in Mikey's home studio. Some of the lyrical content and the band's name was inspired by Herbert Read's 1935 utopian, communist, sci-fi novel called The Green Child.

With such a choice name, it’s no surprise that The Green Child draw their sound from an illusory past as much as they stalk into pastures new. Broadly retro-futuristic in scope, verdant acres of lushly evocative synthesizers and blippy drum machines underpin most of their upbeat yet decidedly uncanny songs. Raven’s calmly scenic and measured vocal flits like a will-o’-the-wisp throughout the tracks, proffering a guiding hand as she walks us through the often eerie, electronic concoctions.

‘Traveler’ opens the album all redolent, beat-minded and labyrinthine. Twisting melody lines swirl and envelop like a sandstorm, whilst Raven coolly projects on a “solitary man” lost to “green oblivion”. Similarly, ‘Her Majesty II’ glistens with its playful yet plaintive vocal and iridescent arpeggios, whilst ‘Bertha’ slows things down with tumbling chimes and stately use of space.

The Green Child are adept at atmosphere, their songs are refined from gently unfolding ideas that never fail to realise and build to their potential. Tracks like ‘Walking Distance’ (featuring Al Montfort on saxophone) and ‘New Years Eve’ are exercises in evolved composition with ideas budding off and blossoming into truly resonant dimensions. The band’s cover of ‘Marie Elene’ (by Keith Pearson) and closing track ‘Destroyer’ are further crowning achievements, both pieces subtly handled with poise and ample melancholic grandeur. The Green Child fix their sights on the heights they want to reach within their songs and much like the project itself don’t want to rush to the finish line. When it becomes more about the unfurling journey, why not take the time to enjoy the trip and burn slower?

‘The Green Child’ is due for release on January 12th through Upset The Rhythm on 180g black vinyl, accompanied by some spirited sleeve design by James Vinciguerra.
