Released March 24, 2012, "GNTTGND" is the debut album from LA-based singer-songwriter Matthew Lurie. After four years writing as a jazz critic at Time Out Chicago and Downbeat Magazine, Lurie moved to LA to "write the songs I wished the artists I was writing about were writing." The result combines the bittersweet introspection of Ben Folds and Jonathan Richman with the all-analog 70s snap of Steely Dan. Produced by Lurie and engineered by Todd Burke (Jack Johnson, Ben Harper) at LA's famous Sound Factory, Lurie personally wrote charts for a band with a five-piece horn section, talk box guitar and alumni from the bands of Pete Yorn and Rebecca Pidgeon. "The title says it all," Lurie says. "I'm interested in music that is just to the left of what is considered conventional. I never fall for the girl next door—it's always her neighbor." A stirring ode to 70s singer-songwriters as seen through through the eyes of the Facebook generation, Matthew and the Mainstream can be seen live all throughout the LA area.
