Amiga Power, the mightiest computer games magazine ever conceived by human beings, is making a comeback in musical form – a double-CD album packed to bursting with brand new Amiga game music remixes, all of them inspired by The Magazine With Attitude.

The first disc will feature remixes based on tunes personally selected by former AP contributors, while the second disc will contain tracks based on games and demos given away on the magazine's coverdisks over the years.

A whole host of star musicians are involved with the project, including Andrew Barnabas, Allister Brimble, Mike Clarke, Fabian Del Priore, Olof Gustafsson, Jogeir Liljedahl, Joi, Jon Hare, Chris Huelsbeck, Barry Leitch, Patrick Nevian, Jason Page, Instant Remedy, Matthias Steinwachs, Jeroen Tel and Tim Wright, and the album will also include a deluxe liner notes booklet containing more than 80 pages of facts, song lyrics, exclusive artwork and written contributions from the AP team.

Included in this compilation are excerpts from the following remixes, in order of appearance:

The Chaos Engine, by Joi. (This is a special exclusive – one of three original Chaos Engine studio tracks created by dance music pioneers Joi back in 1993, which the grand mass of people have never heard owing to the fact that they only got a white label release at the time, limited to 500 copies.)

The first disc will feature remixes based on tunes personally selected by former AP contributors, while the second disc will contain tracks based on games and demos given away on the magazine's coverdisks over the years.

Among the tunes set for inclusion on disc one is a special exclusive courtesy of influential dance music group Joi, AKA brothers Farook and the late Haroon Shamsher. Back in 1993, Joi collaborated with The Bitmap Brothers on the music for The Chaos Engine, creating a trio of studio tracks incorporating various themes and motifs that became part of the game's soundtrack. At the time, these studio tracks were only given a white label release, limited to 500 copies; and as a consequence, almost nobody has ever heard them.

Until now!

The third of the three tracks – nicknamed the Play With Me Mix – will be available exclusively on the Amiga Power album, and as a special bonus for everybody to enJoi, Farook has hugely kindly agreed to allow the first of the tracks to be released for free here and on YouTube, complete with authentic vinyl crackles (which Farook is rather fond of) and an mp3 download option. You lucky people!

The above clip is taken from the second disc. A demo of Jetstrike CD32 appeared on the special Amiga Power CD given away with the alternate version of issue 49 (the May 1995 edition), but despite the AP team's best efforts, they weren't able to include their favourite song from the game: Drop The Bomb. Now, 25 years later, original composer and performer Adam Fothergill (ably assisted by his lyricist sibling Aaron)has produced a rocktastic new rendition of the track which will most definitely be appearing on the AP album. Hurrah!

Pinball Fantasies – and in particular the soundtrack from the brilliant Party Land table – was nominated for inclusion on the album by Linda Barker, and original composer Olof Gustafsson has crafted a delightfully loopy new arrangement combining the main in-game theme and the attract mode music.

The above clip is taken from disc one. The main theme from Coma – a demo created by Rebels in 1990, with music by Static, AKA Anders Bukh – was nominated for inclusion on the album by Dave Green, and remix supremo Instant Remedy has created a terrifically vigorous new arrangement that pays homage to the late '80s/early '90s acid house scene that inspired the original demo track.

The above clip is taken from disc two. Top Secret was an AP-exclusive coverdisk game given away with the magazine's 17th issue (dated September 1992), and original composer Carl Jermy has come up with a delightfully jaunty and upbeat new rendition of the theme tune.

The above clip is taken from disc one. Apidya – and in particular the various tunes that accompany the game's third world, set in the depths of a sinister haunted sewer network – was nominated for inclusion on the album by Mark Ramshaw, and original composer Chris Huelsbeck has come up with a fantastic arrangement combining all the Sewer's Blast melodies (plus the Dollface Brat boss tune) into an epic whole.

The above clip comes from the first CD; the famous intro theme from Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, composed by Barry Leitch, was nominated for inclusion by original Amiga Power editor Matt Bielby, and Barry has produced a tremendously varied remix that starts out in surprisingly tranquil style before really revving things for its second half.

The above clip is taken from CD one; Shadow Fighter was nominated for the album by gentlemanly editor Jonathan Davies, and original composer Fabio Cicciarello has created a fittingly dark and energetically eerie arrangement incorporating the game's intro tune, the menu music and finally the theme that accompanies the evil Shadow Fighter himself...

The above clip is drawn from the first CD. Datastorm may not be a particularly well-known game, but it's a thoroughly tremendous one – a super-speedy and action-packed Defender clone released in 1989. It in fact predates the creation of Amiga Power itself by about two years, but consultant editor Gary Penn remembers it – and its surprisingly groovy intro theme – with immense fondness, hence his choosing to nominate it for inclusion on the album. Top remixing chap Fabian Del Priore has come up with a smashing synthwavey new arrangement for us, with the enthusiastic blessing of original composer Timm Engels. Zap-tastic!

Super Skidmarks, nominated by AP's Steve McGill, is one of the pieces included on disc one. The original game featured a strikingly varied and atmospheric intro tune by Anthony Milas, fusing energetic rock with ambient electronica to capture the feel of being a racing driver – fiercely determined and invigoratingly triumphant one moment, wistfully reflective and warmly nostalgic the next. For the album, Anthony has crafted a terrific new studio rendition of the theme that'll rock your socks off. Red light! Green light! Go! Go! GO!

Among the pieces on CD one is Monster Business, nominated by the one and only Stuart Campbell. This 1991 arcade-style platform romp was replete with merry tunes composed by John Tonnard and Laurens Tummers, and game music legend Jeroen Tel has done us the honour of creating an evocative medley remix combining Stu’s two favourite in-game melodies. Hurrah!

This clip comes from disc one, and will likely be familiar to Amiga owners everywhere, since Cannon Fodder was one of the most successful and popular games ever released for the format, and its music was particularly memorable. Narcissus, the track that accompanies the game's notorious Boot Hill sequence, was originally written by Jon Hare in his teens as a lament for a lost love. For the AP album, Andrew Barnabas has produced a remarkable new arrangement with Jon providing the vocals, alongside a 10-piece string section conducted by Steve Bingham, Louis Thorne on guitars and bass, and Alex Reeves on drums. The full track also includes a trumpet solo from Gareth Williams and a violin solo courtesy of Mark ‘TDK’ Knight, and by ingenious means Andrew has managed to work in a flute solo from the late, great Ben Daglish, adding an extra note of poignancy to an already highly emotionally-charged piece.
