I Can’t Love Away Your Hurt is the first standalone single released by Matthew Stenroos, and the first new music since his 2019 full-length The Window. First penned ten years ago, the track sat virtually untouched on a hard drive until Stenroos revisited it on a whim, and fell back in love with its emotional vulnerability. While his output spans a wide range of sounds, this song is uncharacteristic in its simplicity and directness. 

Stenroos’s mournful voice creates a push and pull between a longing for intimacy and the fear of being truly known. Similarly, soft electric piano is contrasted with a deceptively fast tempo and an energetic 5/4 time signature, musical features that would seem at odds with the track’s ballad-like mood. There’s an inner tension underneath the song’s gentle exterior. 

This standalone single also hints at the upcoming release of Stenroos’s first new full-length album in over five years, slated for a 2026 release; stay tuned.
