"While making this album I was inspired by the scientific themes and topics expressed by both 1970s magazine "Radical Software" and 1980s magazine "OMNI" for their influence on the video synthesis and broadcasting culture of our present day. Radical Software arrived in 1969 at a time of major social upheaval. The Viet Nam war was raging and the loss of Martin Luther King exacerbated feelings that a war on race war seemed inevitable. 

The Nixon presidency amplified feelings of dispare but compelled many to imagine alternatives to the soulless, murderous culture in they were existing in. The urge to create new cultural structures, developed revolutionary video hardware that would play a pivotal role in accelerating the social change people desired. Authors of the magazine understood that change would only occur by increasing the level of social pressure. 
Through their reading of Buckminster Fuller, Gregory Bateson and Marshall McLuhan, they realized what needed to be changed was not the machines, but the instructions used to operate them. The social implications proved radical hardware was fine but what was critically needed was "Radical Software". The magazine became a form of social activism. It would be a forum, a video craft how-to-magazine, a rudimentary marketing and distribution system for the burgeoning community, and a journal of philosophical speculation and political opinion for all who shared their vision. The cover of the album is created by CINEMA.AV using LZX video synthesizers."

Anderson Chimutu is a first generation Malawian American who resides in the city of South Bend, Indiana. Growing up near Chicago and Detroit, Chimutu was exposed to many legends of the regional music scene. This influenced him to get involved with various instrumental bands and djing. Now he focuses on solo productions, which integrate the use of granular sound processors and drum machines. This new approach, coupled with the desire to represent his African heritage, has given birth to Fumbata Phiri. His first offering as Fumbata Phiri came in the form of 2020's "Decoherence", released on the Hungarian label Exiles. He followed that up with "Equipoise", released on UK label Hard Return, "Actuation" on released on Eternal Search in 2021, and now in 2022, "Liminal Space" releasing on Chicago label, Reserve Matinee ran by Michael Stumpf (FAITHFUL) and John Daniel (Forest Management). The sonic qualities found within "Liminal Space" can be described as minimalist and obscure, yet very rhythmic. It's as if a machine has re-programmed itself, using onboard interface sounds, to make cryptic dance tracks. Chimutu wants to challenge the narrative surrounding African influenced music, and does so by creating what comes naturally to him. Putting forth an extension toward the future, while being cognizant of the history that has brought him to this point.

Taking its title from a Minoan legend that deals with rage, greed and destruction, the latest release from Abyss X expands and reconstructs conceptions of aural space and time. Out on February 23 on Danse Noire, Pleasures of the Bull finds the multi-disciplinary artist and producer flirting with the sounds of hard jazz while mystifying the parameters of experimental music across several distinct movements, thus allowing the listener to break free from their sonic principles.

Intoxicating, ambient textures mesh with Abyss X’s own expressive vocals, as well as the sounds of the traditional Cretan lyra, played by Maria Skoula. Her sound modification creates a collage of temporalities – allow yourself to move outside linear dimensions, and her to confide in you. Prog rock guitar lines twist stolidly beneath warped vocal samples, and the timbre of the bowed lyra permeates the atmosphere in a thick, suffocating haze.

As the listener travels through space and time, so too does the artist. Abyss X delves into the fullness of her craft, drawing from her background in theater and performance, in addition to the frenzied energy of her live shows as a musician. The music throbs with a frantic yet unmistakably deliberate drama. Pleasures of the Bull feels like a gentle punch in the gut; a compelling auditory performance and a bold exploration of the narrative album format.

The music compiled in "Ritual Rhythms (of the Obscure Mediterranean Souls)" moves between styles such as Abstract, Modern Classical, Experimental, Downtempo, and Ambient. We must highlight the jazz nuances of pieces such as "Communal Luxury" and the ambient- psychedelics excursions of Pierre Rousseau in Silent Energy, a soundtrack mixed by Nicolas Chaix (I: CUBE) and conceived to be the soundtrack of one of the last parades by Japanese designer Issey Miyake.
