VAGUE PODCAST 050 / MATTHIAS GEERTS

I was honoured to make my debut at the infamous Revolver Upstairs on Good Friday at Revolver Fridays hosted by 150 BPM, Rave Cave and Area 3000. 

At midnight, I opened the event with an hour of thumping party starters with some unexpected twists and turns. Inspired by the 150 BPM and Rave Cave sound, my vision was for a groovy, eclectic, banging journey to set the tone for the evening and keep the Revs crowd on their toes. It includes driving techno, psy-tech, house and soul vocals, hard tekkers, 80s dark synths and 90s nostalgia.

Thank you 150 BPM and Rave Cave for including me on this powerful all-femme lineup.

A set crafted for summer queer loving and booty shaking. Sharing music with others is always deeply personal and I wanted to pay tribute to tracks that shaped my teenage years bookending the set with Sweet Like Chocolate - (Ruff Driverz Vocal) & Kylie Minogue’s Slow (chemical brothers remix) they both instantly bring a smile to my face and stir up so much emotion and joy not to mention a sneaky Spice Girls edit sandwiched between. 

Moving through some classic house sounds and diving straight into the genre bending I love so much. To me a queer dance floor has no singular sound. Around the world people have been coming together in both celebration and protest fighting for our right to exist unapologetically, bound by music. Our bodies are political and how we show up in the nightlife realm has shaped identities for decades. To me it’s all about connection, movement and playfulness. 

My sets are far from linear and this is no exception, I’ve always loved progressive house and more recently have been drooling over percussive, latin, hard groove and funk coming out of South America. I’m a sucker for a vocal, throwback, bootleg and anything camp and borderline tacky. Life’s too short to be pretentious when it comes to music. Let the people dance!

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: How was your first DJ gig?
𝙈𝘼𝙏𝙏𝙃𝙄𝘼𝙎: I think my first paid gig was at Club Vaag. Of course, I was super nervous—playing on a proper sound system for the first time felt intense and kind of magical. Luckily, they usually give new artists the opening slot, so you can ease into it as the crowd starts arriving. But honestly, it was amazing. So many people came up to me afterward saying they loved it, asking for my name—it was really flattering. I was already used to getting attention on social media, but this was different. It felt personal. It really moved me.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Why did you decide to start producing and djing?
𝙈𝘼𝙏𝙏𝙃𝙄𝘼𝙎: DJing became a new way to express myself. I’ve been obsessed with techno and trance since I was younger, and I wanted to try something outside my comfort zone. I’ve never really had a "full-time job" in the traditional sense—I know that sounds privileged, but I worked hard to get to where I was. At some point, fashion and content creation stopped fulfilling me. I felt empty.
I’ve played the trumpet for over 10 years, from when I was a kid into my early 20s. I knew classical music wasn’t where my heart was anymore—but electronic music was. Producing came later. I’m still taking baby steps, but it’s helping me carve out my own sound.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: As a newcomer, are you still finding your style
𝙈𝘼𝙏𝙏𝙃𝙄𝘼𝙎: I think so, yes. I’ve gone through phases—starting with 135 BPM techno, then shifting to harder techno, then dipping into more commercial trance. Now I’m finding myself somewhere in the middle of underground trance, hypnotic grooves, hard house, techno, and melodic breaks. And yeah, I know it sounds cliché, but I really try to tell a story. I take my time building up a set, allowing for breaks and melancholic moments—those emotional pauses matter to me just as much as the rhythm and energy. I think I’m getting close to the sound I’ve always wanted to create.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: We are celebrating Pride Month. Do you have anything to say about it?
𝙈𝘼𝙏𝙏𝙃𝙄𝘼𝙎: Absolutely. Pride Month is such an important moment—especially with everything happening in the world right now. Honestly, I don’t even have the words for some of it. But what’s most important is remembering that Pride started as a protest. It’s not just rainbows and parties; we have to keep using our voices, especially for the issues that go beyond the surface. Visibility, activism, and solidarity still matter deeply.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Any big plans for the near future?
𝙈𝘼𝙏𝙏𝙃𝙄𝘼𝙎: Yes! I’m working on my first trance EP, which I’m hoping to release in November. Also, I’ve got my first overseas gig coming up this August—in Montreal, Canada, for Fierté Montréal. It’s part of their Pride festival, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Luke Blunton steps into the spotlight with his debut EP on Laib und Seele Records. A dynamic journey through textured, progressive soundscapes. The four-track release flows effortlessly between playful minimalism, infectious groove-driven house, deep dubby atmospheres and a trance-infused remix.

Opening with ‘Mirror State’, this track sets a confident tone with playful precision. A vocoded vocal line weaves through a stripped-back minimal framework, layered with rolling acid modulations and anchored by a bouncy bassline.

Next up, ‘Daisy Chain’ locks into a classic four-to-the-floor rhythm, a delicately produced proggy, deep house cut with meticulous attention to detail, topped off with a cheeky infectious melody that gets bodies moving and faces smiling.

‘Marinara Trench’ follows, diving deeper into dubby depths with a spacious, atmospheric feel.
