Sometimes the song just happens. What I’m most excited about in this song is that I experimented with an extended vocal technique towards throat singing and discovered a new voice within me. It felt like meeting someone new yet mysterious who’s been there all along, I invited this voice to haunt my throat for a little while.

I Surrender To This

A lament composed for Bru Theatre's production of Gol, to premiere on December 10, 2021 in Galway, Ireland. A story about the the "bean coainte", professional criers prevalent in Irish culture for centuries. The bean coainte were essential members of the community and were called upon to keen the spirit of the dead, helping them "cross" over to the other side and lead the bereaved through important processes of grief. The caoineadh (the keen) disappeared in the middle of the 20th century.
