Words from Headphone Commute - 

I often think about childhood experiences. Don't you? Remember those magical moments of discovery of how something in this universe truly works or the slow disintegration of fiction into reality or the self-guided journey into a fantasy, knowing full well that it's really imaginary and yet completely giving in, and letting it absorb you into other worlds? For me, there were adventures into outer space, of alien planets and improbable lands, of other beings just like us, and yet completely different in every way. It's no wonder that many of my fantastical voyages were accompanied by music, made, of course, by instruments unknown. This "space music" is what continues to attract me to some aspects of the cinematic, electronic, and experimental sounds of today. It's no wonder I still attempt to recreate each voyage with the lush pads of my synths. For British composer and musician Angus MacRae, this reflection on childhood imagination comes in a form of his new album, Vivarium. Across twelve pieces, each representing a specific memory, MacRae uses the immediate presence of acoustic instrumentation (piano, strings, woodwinds, and even voice) to capture the emotional experience of the unreal worlds. Today I am premiering a track from the album titled "Flame" which is due out as a single on September 1st. This is a gorgeous and dynamic piece, pairing a gently wavering piano melody in a whirlwind of a rising emotional gust. Listening to this piece you can't help but get lifted into a torrent of a sentimental storm and get carried away into those other worlds. "Written against the backdrop of a changing world, this need to escape inside the vivarium, to recapture the magic and mystery within, and to ultimately learn the limits of the glass - seemed to me more important than ever."

Written by regular collaborators Antarctic Wastelands & Norvik, it is inspired by how we hold on to things that are dear and important to us - memories, objects, places, people - even after they are gone.

There are times when we must let go, but that doesn't diminish the importance of things of the past. It simply means we have to free ourselves from the burden of their weight, instead allowing ourselves to cherish the memories that remain.

A friend of mine was going through a hard time and I felt very emotionally connected to the darkness they were feeling.  I went to the piano and improvised a song for them to express the feeling of sadness I was experiencing for their struggle.

Matthew Robert Cooper has been releasing music as Eluvium on Temporary Residence Ltd since his debut in 2003. So, yes, I have been listening to his music for 20 years now. In fact, I interviewed this Portland-based composer about a decade ago [I think we’re due for a revisit, don’t you think?], and Matt has graciously contributed a track to Volume 3 of For Ukraine benefit compilation, curated by Rafael Anton Irisarri. Eluvium’s music defies categorization, but fans of ambient, contemporary classical, and solo piano will surely recognize his name. Some may be lucky enough to be in possession of his massive boxset, Life Through Bombardment Vol. 2. In the last few years, Eluvium has released Shuffle Drones (2017), Pianoworks (2019) and two volumes of Virga (2019 and 2021). These are some great examples in his latest exploration of cross-over genres, slotted, as the titles suggest, somewhere between neo-classical and drone. And yet, for his new release, Eluvium evolves into an orchestral, euphonious work of grand proportions, inviting an entire Budapest Scoring Orchestra, a modular synth and bass clarinet duo known as Golden Retriever, and the celebrated American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), to compose a wide-spanning, concert-hall worthy album, inspired by T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land and Richard Brautigan’s All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace. I am honoured to premiere a track for you from his latest single, “Phantasia Telephonics,” which hides more than a few secrets, with some of them revealed by Matt in a short write-up on headphonecommute.com

Mattia Cupelli is an Italian artist based in Rome, Italy.
His sound is influenced by genres as Post-Classical and Dark Ambient sounds to modern Experimental Electronic music and the world between.

Early works are mainly based on Soundtrack, Orchestral Music, and Modern Piano music, which makes himself known through his YouTube channel, which counts over 35 million plays and 130K subscribers.
 
His LP "UNDERNEATH" presents a new ambient/neo-classical sound infused with modern electronic sound. 
“Matching electronic components against a neo-classical sweep, his work recalls the likes of Nicolas Jaar or Ólafur Arnalds, with some Nils Frahm thrown in" (from CLASH Magazine) about ONWARDS Son of Marketing writes: “shows minimal and delicate ambient, evocative whispered vocals, growing rhythms in the second part and an impressive pathos”.

In 2019 releases "EP I" with some old pieces recomposed, followed by "EP II" in 2020, featured new obscure and dark tracks influenced by electronic contemporary music.
Also, is in the production of a project named "REWORK" that features some reimagined old tracks under a new unique style (Rework I and Rework II).
 
In 2021 releases RUINS with a new fresh ethereal sound, with a sense of ancient spirituality. Rock.it described as "a narrative so powerful as to drag into a plot that each of us generates according to our experiences".
