Description: From the vaults (ca. 1990): this is a sketch for an ambient piece for three guitars based on a simple aleatory structure: I overdubbed three short melody lines, more-or-less in C, and recorded them "blind" -- that is, without listening to how each line interacted with the other two in terms of rhythm or harmony.

Electronic and Experimental Sketchbook

Holy crap you guys. Ok so I don't know if this counts, this was done ALL MANUAL, but basically I played all the piano keys one octave at a time, so starting on A, then A then A then A, etc to the highest one. Then I saved that track as A. Then the same with B and so on to G. So seven tracks corresponding to seven letters. Each track was a little over a minute long. 

And I had this giant list of alphabetical verbs on my computer so I carved out only what started with A through G AND had A-G in the second letter, and then had Alex the male computer record it. (I had Samantha the female do it too but their timing was different and it was too hard to weave. Maybe some other day.)

So then with the spoken verb track leading the way, I place the appropriate first letter and second letter and let it play. 

Any time it the second letter changed I brought in the letters (it was more interesting bringing in both than just the changing letter), and likewise anytime the first letter I brought in the corresponding two tracks for the first two letters. 

So this got really bulky in the BE-CE section, and pretty full most of the time but winds up and winds down. 

Some interesting notes:

I have no idea what "AFK" is. I left it in there. It's probably a mistake.
My bottom E key is dead so you hear the percussion of me trying to get a sound out of it.
Left other ambient sounds in.

Disquiet0611 - Abate Cackle Get (with voice)

From the #AnotherGreenWorld project, this a response to Sombre Reptiles. Guitar and rhythm, not my strong suit, so this playful, semi-loud response. The "Anarchestra" is place in Providence, Rhode Island with dozens of homemade percussion instruments. Originally this track featured some of them but they got erased with time. Also the drumtrack is a stolen 9/8 from youtube, originally at my wife Leela's request, for a song she was doing for the Brian Eno school of song assignments. I took the distorted chords and percussion back for this track.

Disquiet Junto

mattmadd & gentil - Effronté [disquiet0473]

This week's Disquiet Junto prompt was to create the second part of an asynchronous trio. These are always fun because you never know what you're going to get!

I used a random number generator and got the track "Final Frontier" by Matt Madden (https://soundcloud.com/mattmadd/final-frontier-disquiet0472).  I thought about chopping it up and having Mr. Madden duet with himself, but then I lay down an improvised electric piano accompaniment and it all seemed to work pretty well, so I went with that. I nudged a few of my MIDI notes around to synchronize with the guitar and to give the impression we had planned it!

I EQ'd and compressed Matt's guitar, and EQ'd my electric piano also. I added a bit of delay for flavor at dramatic times (mostly the end). I accidentally added an amp sim to the keyboard, and hey it sounded nice! I also added a little flanger to hit a fairly high-frequency to move a little motion to the "fuzzy" static sound of the keyboard. The weirdest thing I did is sidechain-compress the guitar to be a little quieter when the electric piano played...and then sidechain-compressed the electric piano to be a little quieter when the guitar played! It actually works out pretty well, I think, for an experiment. Maybe because both instruments have pretty intense transients and because there's a lot of back and forth.

Rift and Like (disquiet473)

This is the second phase of a three-part collaborative project for the Disquiet Junto. From a list of almost 70 short tracks, I chose this piano piece by @ChrisLedwidge and came up with an accompanying guitar part. Next week a third person might choose to add a part to complete the trio. Even if that doesn't happen, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.

Du(o J)et No. 34 in A minor [Disquiet0473]

Broody ambient/soundtrack piece made up of a variety of found sounds: a local building's ventilator, a clip from a documentary about Brian Eno, and snippets from some old, unused guitar recordings of mine.

NOTE:This is a revised version of a song I uploaded earlier. Shout-out to  @michael-ash-sharbaugh for pointing out a technical glitch which, it turned out, was easy enough to fix.

This week's Disquiet Junto is the third and final week of collaboration. I used a random number generator to select a track from last week's playlist and got number 73, a beautiful duet in A minor on piano and guitar performed by @MattMadd and @ChrisLedwidge.

My goal in adding was to complement the beautiful piece they'd made. I played a 4ms Ensemble with a 16N faderbank, which ran through Mimeophon into Qpas (both of which were also tweaked with 16N). This ran into a shimmer reverb on Blue Sky with Valhalla Supermassive in stock Gemini mode for additional diffusion. I think I did alright.

The Lonely Vicar (Junto Remix See Description)

This a remix of https://soundcloud.com/mattmadd/duodronedrumtrio-disquietjunto0474-revised-and-corrected which was the third part of a triadic collaboration with joyneski and melondruie for last weeks Disquiet Junto. As recommended in this weeks junto assignment, I dug into all three of the contributions to find parts to use, then added more of my own. I heard a latent shoegazing droney noise rock vibe in so I went in that direction, doing what I can to do what needs to be done. As I mix, conceive, arrange, chop and tweak, (and wonder what the heck is happening), I'm reminded that I know nothing. Not exactly true, I probably (maybe) know something. Just as our ego tells us we're pretty darn smart and cool, we're reminded we don't actually know all that much. So keep learning, you fool. 
As I was browsing Disquiet.com to find info for this week's post, I stumbled on this 50th anniversary tribute to Allen Ginsberg's Fall of America album (https://allenginsberg.bandcamp.com/album/allen-ginsberg-s-the-fall-of-america-a-50th-anniversary-musical-tribute), and the track "Elegy for Neal Cassidy." Was great to hear that (thanks for sharing that Marc). I love that word, elegy. So since I know nothing, this week can be an elegy for the presumed knowledge it's time to let go of, and a reminder to learn something.
