Revered Hamburg enigma and VHS specialist Braun Jaschkewitz racks up a full clip of coldwave bullets for local bastion V I S, counting stacks of killer, unidentifiable private pressings, flohmarkt finds and legendary gems.

The first of two ‘Neid Dabai Zu Sein’ (or ‘To Give Envy’, if we’re not mistaken) tapes brims over with an early ‘80s quintessence, all screwed drum machines, tart synths and an enchanting mix of German and english-sung vocals that exemplifies the era’s diversity within a theme. 

Like a sorta parallel to Annie Hogan’s goth salvos, Jaschkewitz’s selections run a finely-shaded gamut of vibes from wiry lo-fi to poppy NDW and sultrier swag. It’s frankly facemelting parade, mostly taken from 7”s and recorded in one-take, although you suspect he spent serious time pulling out that track-list, which holds to an absolutely head frying mesh of steady, sleazy pacing, but prangs off at right angles when you least expect it.

Starting this year with a special guest Eleganter Elephanter, this recorded hour plunges into the dark, into the unknown, but also into what is unfortunately far too real at the moment.

Going back to Fusion 2014, Eleganter Elephanter's set was one of the initial sparks for me to get into experimental music. This particular mix has remained a permanent fixture in my playlists over the years. Many of the songs from it are extremely charged for me, simply because I now associate so many important moments with them. The fact that he has now recorded a metamorphosen, to me is something very special :)

It's certainly been a very strange and unpleasant year, finishing on an extremely sour note. However, some very, very wonderful and beautiful music has been released despite this, helping elevate one's spirit above the noise and dismal situation our planet is facing.

I didn't celebrate new year (a pint with my pal was it)...but earlier in the evening I made myself record this 2.5 hour mix of some of my favourite ambient and downtempo music of the year.

It includes Saeko Killy, Ramzi, XIII, Michal Turtle, Alek Lee, Quade, Pieter Kock, Secret Circuit, Erik Wollo, Ssiege, Jon Keliehor & Signy Jakobsdottir, Greville & The Lonely Voices, Finis Africae, Khidja, Froid Dub, Sign Libra, Habitat Ensemble, Simplists, The Black Frame, Kane Ikin, MD Pallavi & Andi Otto, Claire Rousay, Deep Nalstrom, Juna, Severin Black, Peter Power, Shakali and maybe a few others.

Second part in a killer, wave-surfing double header by Hamburg enigma Braun Jaschkewitz for the V I S label, getting weirder and spanning wider than the first volume with ample screwballs and WTF bullets inside.

Where the preceding volume focussed on synth-pop, NDW and new wave, ‘Neid Dabai Zu Sein #2’ plays out a sleazier, more spangled soundtrack to creeping the Reeperbahn and scoring wraps of wizz. If the first volume mostly left us scratching our head for a tracklist, this one has us totally flummoxed for its flux of top shelf obscurities, which open with what sounds like a field recording of Pac-Man in an arcade and proceed to pluck curios from behind the ear. 

Vocoder-led echoes of Zeus B. Held give way to curdled NWD grooves, horny boogie woogie, cybernoir soundtrack and an absolute zinger in that german cover of The S.O.S. Band’s ‘Just Be Good to Me’ on the A-side, before he cues up lysergic synth soul, oily electro downstrokes and piquant funk-not-funk, plus some heroic ‘80s main character themes and speedy steppers on the flip.

In the history of music, the drumset initially functioned in the background of the band setting as a framing and space-creating rhythm instrument. In the 50s and 60s, drummers liberated their playing and developed their own interpretations with which they created individual moments of tension and thus allowed the drums to come to the fore as a melody instrument. This development reached its peak in the late 60s, when many progressive and psychedelic rock bands integrated sprawling drum solos into their songs. We introduce you to pioneering drummers such as Max Roach, Art Blakey, Billy Cobham, Ginger Baker and Mike Clark.

This version is without the spoken parts, just the music.

A collector by nature, Isabel began experimenting what DJing could be like in 2019, focusing in collecting hidden and forgotten sounds recorded in cassettes over time. It’s in this field that she asserts herself as Son Objet, where her approach to Djing goes from the selection of bizarre and cosmic sonorities from the diy cassette culture movement, combining them with less conventional current compositions. Her main resources are cuts and loops that are infinitely juxtaposed throughout the set to transition and build the narrative thread that wanders between introspection and dance. Along this electronic route, paths focused on psychedelia are outlined, also highlighting spoken words and sound collage.

"I wanted it groovie and emotional. Tracks that would either feel like nostalgia or happiness to me. I think now we decide."

Den in Berlin lebenden Tausendsassa zu beschreiben ist ebenso schwierig wie ihn musikalisch eindeutig zu verorten.
Dieses Vorhaben würde ihm auch gar nicht gerecht werden, denn genau das zeichnet sein musikalisches Schaffen erst aus.
Egal ob mit seinem @Riolabel , seiner Supergroup Dolphins, bestehend aus ihm, @Daloworks und @FreyBenedikt, oder @Pastforward, seiner Radioshow bei Cashmere Radio, die er zusammen mit @Hendrik_Stein und dem @Kryptic_dj betreibt. Es bleibt immer unkonventionell, frisch und spannend!

Aber auch wenn er sich alleine hinter die Turntables stellt, kommt stets etwas Überraschendes und Neues heraus. Menqui ist eben ein wahrer Meister seiner Künste und ein grosser Zauberer.

Mit Stolz und Freude präsentieren wir euch dieses ganz besondere und einzigartige Set und hoffen, dass es die Geister des Winters ein letztes Mal besingt, damit auch sie den Sommer durch ihre Ruhe finden können.
