Capt.Álvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca survivor of 80 men from the failed "Narvaez expedition"would journey across the American continent for 8 years.Their fleet was battered by an enormous hurricane,along the West coast of Florida resulting in the destruction of four ships and loss of 600 men.They would face destruction again by another powerful hurricaine in 1528, their home made rafts would flounder near the mouth of the Mississippi the next year. Four men survived, (one survivor was a black berber slave called Estephanios who would be enslaved once more by coastal tribes along side with De Vac;s men) = they 8 years later they made it to Northern Mexico and a Spanish Garrison Town. He was the 1st Native Tribal advocate in the Americas especially when he became prefect governor of Paraguay. His chronical's of his experiences are available for reading may only be in Spanish though and are in the Royal Spanish Archive. See the 1991 film "Cabeza De Vaca" it gives a good idea what it was like.
