Invictus is a setting of William Ernest Henley's poem of the same name.  The poem's words lend themselves to dramatic imagery, which the setting attempts to portray.

A setting of the William Butler Yeats poem of the same name, An Irish Airman Foresees His Death sets lines of conflicting ideas to conflicting sonorities to emphasize the struggle in the mind of the poem's subject.  The piece ends with a major and minor chord of the same root clashing against one another on the words "life" and "death"; then switching, as life and death seem equally desirable and undesirable to the titular Airman.
