Some notes on the mix:

I was introduced to Bowie as a kid, thanks to my Dad playing and singing his music all the time at home. He absolutely loves Bowie and we both shed a tear the day he died! I’m really, really grateful to my Dad for instilling his music into me early on, because I doubt I would have quite such profound love for it without the early introduction.

The tracks in the mix are the tracks I know and love, and probably the ones most people are familiar with - mainly the ‘hits’, I guess. While working on the mix I started to delve further into the Bowie back catalogue and have found some absolute gems. I was tempted to include them and lean the mix more toward his unknown stuff but I wanted it to reflect my own personal Bowie experience up to now and wasn’t too fussed about appearing to have a vast knowledge of his work, because in reality I’ve only scratched the surface, so far. 

It wasn’t hard to choose the tracks I wanted to include, but working out how to present them as a mixtape took some thought. I haven’t spent as long at the ‘drawing board’ stage of a mix before. It was clearly going to be quite different from one of my party mixtapes - the pace had to be slower (you can’t cut off a Bowie track after a minute as they are too epic/well known and often tell stories which need to be played out), I couldn’t add beats/acapellas as it would be sacrilege and sound bad, I couldn’t do too much mixing as it just wouldn’t work with a lot of the music - and so I decided to approach it as a documentary-style mix, using speech samples from interviews to add some extra layers and help bridge some of the tracks which changed style or tempo too dramatically to blend or drop. I also wanted to try and get some humour in somewhere, and luckily found a lot of gold from people imitating Bowie in different shows. 

I knew I had to put a turntablist/hip hop kind of stamp on this somehow, to reflect my DJ style and personlise the mixtape. I worked turntablism in by making a cut and paste intro and throwing in the odd scratch when dropping samples. Generally the whole thing was treated quite delicately so as to honour the memory of the freaky old bastard as best I could.

So yeah, that’s how it turned out!

So after months of careful preparation and hours of digging I bring to you the final instalment of my Golden Era Hip Hop series Vol 3. This mix I spent longer on and rather than give you interviews with legends of the scene I have delivered an extra 15 minutes of classics. It has been one of my favorite pieces of work compiling these mixes and no expense is spared into finding all those hidden gems. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did compiling my own personal favourites 🙏

So stoked that I FINALLY got around to finishing the second installment of my ’20 Years a Kid’ mixtape series! This second edition covers the years 1998 - 2000 when big beat was mutating into breaks and funk influenced music still reigned supreme. It’s one of the things I love about this era, it’s all about THE FUNK. The funkier the better! Personally I feel that’s something that’s missing a bit these days and is more than due for a comeback (watch this space 😉). For those of you who remember the legendary Globe days in Sydney then this should take you right back to the dancefloor on one of those epic nights!
