We proudly present: Timezones Nigeria, a 22-track compilation created to honor the depth and diversity of Nigeria’s instrumental music, while forging new connections between Nigerian & Chillhop-affiliated artists.

Dedicated to the people driving the sound forward, half the compilation is driven purely by a lineup of Nigeria’s brightest producers and artists, who deliver vibes upon vibes through a chill, instrumental lens. And then, 11 collaborative tracks featuring Chillhop-affiliated artists are scattered across the tracklist, bridging two musical styles in new ways while ensuring that the Nigerian sound remains dominant.

To ensure that Timezones Nigeria reflects the depth and nuance of the country’s music and visual culture, we partnered with Nigerian visual artists and illustrators to develop the project’s artwork and visual identity, and tapped a Nigerian cultural advisor to guide our decisions with care and awareness at every step. The result is a compilation that’s equal parts grounded and innovative, with afrobeats, alté and highlife instrumentals driving the sound.

This is just the beginning. With Timezones, we aim to continue highlighting pioneering instrumental scenes across the globe and creating new connections with one goal: curating boundary-pushing instrumental music that pays homage to its roots.

Genre-defying Nigerian star Lady Donli kicks off Chillhop’s Timezones Nigeria compilation with a double single, uniting with Chillhop-affiliated artist Ruck P for “Tarkwa Bay,” while tapping close collaborator JMS for “WantU2Stay." On “Tarkwa Bay” Lady Donli and Ruck P craft a summery, guitar driven instrumental; one to play while you’re laying on the beach on a sunny afternoon. Lady Donli and JMS’s synergy is in full display on “WantU2Stay,” as they wave emotive vocals and silky synths into a dynamic arrangement that's full of energy and groove.

Richard was born with be-bop in his heart and a twinkle in his left eye, the bastard child of Bernard Perdie and Cab Calloway. Growing up he beat 4/4 time against the walls of his wooden cage, invented melodies on his sister’s cassio, searching always for that uncut musical high. He first hoped to find it in the complex rhythms of classic jazz, days lost alone with his drum set, evenings frittered away in smoky juke joints across the length and breadth of his native Toronto. But after two decades spent in pursuit of this false prophet, he woke up with empty pockets and an arrhythmic hangover. Turning to the pop which he had always eschewed, wandering lost amidst the fragments of modern music scene, Richard birthed the persona which would allow him to express the indefinable sounds of his own soul– Dickystixxx.
