Vague Imaginaires collaborates with marginalised individuals; the homeless, psychiatric patients, social workers and refugees, infusing his music with their melancholic experiences. Blending melodies and synthesizers with the everyday sounds of life, his music transforms the mundane into a dreamlike world, like flying in a dream.

Labour Jacks is a new sublabel of One Eyed Jacks focusing more on techno and club tools, with artworks based on found, accidental art created by labour. The first few releases will showcase glue patterns found in ripped off plaques, where the gesture of the glue application by workers can be quite beautiful and graceful, even if unintentionally.

The first release comes from label-owner himself Photonz, a mainstay of the Lisbon scene and a prolific artisan of weird bangers and genre-hopping, left-of-centre underground dance music. On “Dark Valley”, this seasoned Portuguese producer focuses on raw techno rollers that manage to incorporate influences as wide as 90’s UK techno, aquatic Detroit melodies and even some orchestral grime hooks to good measure.

After a few months of the release of our second LP, the dystopian—Miami-inspired—forward-thinking record by Nick León, ‘A Tropical Entropy’, we thought it was time to let other producers take a shot at his output. So, we invited 7 of them from across the electronic music landscape to reconstruct the sunlit beaches of Nick’s original tracklist. Gracias RHR, CCL, Roza Terenzi, Minor Science, Dubbel Dutch, TreOhFie & Loraine James.

What we got in return was a mix of avant-garde Brazilian funk, low-key and spacious club cuts, festival-grade bangers, and deeply methodical electronica.

"From Jackson, Mississippi, Nicholas Maloney carves a vision of lo-fi atmosphericana. Though there is some use of traditional instruments, like guitar, organ and banjo, Lignum Muzek functions more like a weather vane. Field recordings of natural spaces around Mississippi result in bouts of almost-silences, which are less sound, more detectable pressure change. But then there’s the occasional insect, a sheet metal’s melody. A barely recognizable trombone, the sigh of trees.

Minimalist in arrangement but planetary in room size, the longform tracks move between spatial experiment and texture-as-mood. Wood has a heavy presence on the album—Maloney saws it, throws it off a roof onto a shed. But musique concrète is just one of the tape's dimensions. There are affective swells, romantic and buoyant, but still they retain a climatological sensibility. The artist’s interest in pushing the listener’s focus leads to deep listening gone weird: Lignum Muzek evokes that feeling when the sounds of Earth suddenly become understood as cosmological events, alien, gorgeous, and terrifying.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered August-November 2019.
Composed using field recordings of wooden structures, trees, large outdoor spaces, wood degradation, and various natural sonic environments around Mississippi - along with prepared acoustic guitar and banjo, woodwinds, trombone, sheet metal, thrown objects, cassette tapes, voice, synthesizers, and organ.

Nicholas Maloney is a sound artist, multi-instrumentalist, and performer from Jackson, Mississippi. He earned his bachelor's degree in Recording Industry Production from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2017. Working primarily in the areas of what could be called drone, ambient, and musique concrète, Nicholas creates personal, evocative recordings, while at the same time offering a pallet of sound that can be used to practice the rewarding act of deep listening. He looks to challenge the listeners’ focus and perception of sound. Much of his work explores the textural nature of sound within a framework of progressing and evolving compositions. He is interested in the interaction among texture, sound, and space.

Under his full name, Nicholas Maloney creates compositions using field recordings, found sounds, electronics, and a variety of processing and audio transformation techniques, creating works that challenge traditional forms of composition and encourage deep listening.

He also records under the moniker, Blanket Swimming, exploring experimental, ambient, and drone compositions using guitar, synthesizers, tape manipulation, field recordings, voice, and other instrumentation. Blanket Swimming has the rare talent of straddling both melancholy drones and uplifting melodies, striking lasting emotional impression by exercising the construction/destruction of stereo drones with found sounds and often ethereal vocals.

Maloney also records under the name Sleep Silver Lightning, exploring compositions for the guitar and voice.

In 2015, Nicholas Maloney co-founded the netlabel, Warm Milk Recordings with Whitson Ramsey.
