Dublin’s Woozy label premieres on wax with Radial, the debut EP from newcomer Coe (@djcoefroms11). 3 dubstep-informed club weapons b/w a percussive rework from Or:la (@orla_cd).

The title track recalibrates mid-noughties FWD> pressure, suspending us in an E-licked smog before puncturing the rave-lry with thrusting bass stomps and fervorous IDM-adjacent drums for an electro-id crazed stomper. Say (KL Tribute) flexes Coe’s wub mechanics, presenting computerised sound chaos before dropping a half-step hungry wobble fest, mounting the pressure on the ‘floor to a near combustible, skanking peak.

On the flip, 403 slightens the pace for a chugging techno/electro zinger with a faint dembow shell, sounding like the soundtrack to a sinister salsa dance. Or:la’s drum-tastic Radial rework sees us out, conducting an orchestra of percussive pistons akin to a ravey engine room for a mid-tempo grooving killer.

Nikki Nair is fast becoming one of the most diverse and forward-thinking artists in electronic music, flying the flag for increasingly hybridized methods and doing it your own way. His sound is inimitable and cannot be defined; readily bottling a multitude of emotions in a relatively short space of time. 

Nikki’s meteoric rise has come in the form of eclectic releases like his ‘More is Different’ EP on Dirtybird to the downright filthy and party-starting ‘Trying To’ on Bristol’s Scuffed Recordings - Influenced by anything from Detroit techno, to lush ambient soundscapes and Florida breaks. The Knoxville born, Atlanta based producer continues his journey through shape shifting universes on his debut for Lobster Theremin, with five different but equally impressive tracks. 

‘Shufflin’ kick starts the EP in Nikki’s signature, unpredictable style; as squelchy bass-lines growl at heavily swung drums and low pitched vocal loops, before ‘WWC’ -  an off-kilter minimal stepper, walks the tight-rope between entropy and synchronized dance.

‘I Can’t Stop’ meanders from kinky bass & breaks, to deconstructed dubstep and trap; causing more facial expressions in six minutes than ever thought possible. Nair’s hybridized methods continue to shine through in ‘Yoland And His Tortoise’ - a trippy and colourful dream told through nuance in sound. The EP then closes off with the laid-back grooves of ‘Urquoise’ - a hypnotising ritual best practiced in nature.

There was an aging writer called Mortise Koshimitsu who lived in a small apartment. The apartment was beset with problems. It was damp, the wiring was frail and in the summer the leaking pipes added a must and swelling to the wood in the windows that effectively countered the joys of the heat. Koshimitsu’s life had been lived chiseling away at circumstance, and circumstances had not proved easy. There was however, one small reliable rush to be had, and it lay through a gloomy doorway, down some stairs and past a register.

The debut release on Miras stems from co-honchos and long-time residents Atrice. Their musical work is heavily inspired by the uncanny interplay between the tangibility of digital stimulus satiation and authentic real-life encounters in an increasingly disconnected world. Atrice’s compositions have a strong focus on detail, which originates from their academic formation as sound designers. However, the key to the Zurich-based Duo’s production is their playful approach to established genres resulting in emotive soundscapes and energetic amalgamations.
On the three tracks this approach is perfectly mirrored through a hybrid of sultry House, hard-hitting Breaks and neck-bending Gabber. The EP kicks of with the title track "J.A.-Ris", a contagious homage to early Jungle with tight basses and witty Juke inserts. The deep pads enter like a windy thunderstorm on a humid summer day, momentarily taking the light from the sky. It’s followed by the second composition "Give Me", which moves between Breakbeat and House with a futuristic sound design. It penetrates through the darkened clouds and lets the first sunrays shine on the asphalt. A slight smell of Petrichor underlines the dystopian moment.  Lastly "Demorado" enters with many familiar facets, which however are being completely turned on their heard over the course of the piece, reminiscent of a spellbinding whirlwind. It is characterized by Gabber, IDM and Drum'n'Bass influences with cinematic gestures and complex drum structures.
