Freedom’s soulful music is driven by a thumbing kick drum that lays the foundation for Mau Power’s & Archie Roach’s dynamic and passionate vocals.

Sing Strong is a powerful song that combines Traditional & Hip Hop cultures. Mau Power raps in both English as well as a Traditional Western Island Dialect of the Torres Straits. 

The song talks about the passing & keeping of knowledge. Mau Power has been given ancient knowledge by a wise elder & in the first verse he talks about the honour of this process & how is now ready to be a man, to be a leader of his people. 

After a dramatic cinematic introduction that takes you to the heart of the Islands, there is a big chorus & MP goes on to deliver a captivating first verse that is rapped in Traditional language. 

In the second verse that is rapped in English, Mau Power talks about what he is going to do with this knowledge to help ensure the survival of his people, & the survival of their strong, proud culture.

This has become a classic from Brisbane, Townsville to Cairns, The Torres Strait Islands & indeed the world. This version was remixed & re-recorded by Meridian Nights.

This song was written in remembrance of Eddie “Koiki” Mabo and the plaintiffs of the “Mabo Case” in their journey that led to the iconic high court ruling of the Mabo decision in 1992. This was an important event in Australian history that abolished the term of “terra nullius” and contributed to the movement of land rights for the “First Nations” people of Australia. It also is a message to remind us to honour the many unsung heroes that have sacrificed so much to create this world we now live in and benefit from. It is a reminder that the journey is not over, and we must now carry the legacy forward.

It opens the discussion to try to understand why the nation is so depressed and vividly & descriptively highlight the tragic impacts it has on communities and families across the country.

The lyrics begin with the line; “The haunting sounds wail from a mother’s cry”. This gives you a visual of the emotion that is about to follow, and with the melancholy keys and arrangement It creates the atmosphere and sound of a real emotional pain that penetrates the soul. No words can describe the feeling, and this sets the undertone to outline the true impacts this issue has on our youth.

Inspired by real life stories and personal experience; “Tree of Life” was written in the hope that it will bring the issue of suicide into a more open discussion, and normalise the conversation about depression, loneliness and emotional pain; especially for our youth.

Henry Gibson Dan AM (25 August 1929[1]– 30 December 2020), known as Seaman Dan, an Indigenous Australian, was a Torres Strait Islander singer-songwriter with a national and international reputation whose first recording was released in 2000. His album Perfect Pearl won him an ARIA award for Best World Music Album in 2004[2] and in 2009 won again with Sailing Home.[3] In 2014 at the age of 85 he released A Caribbean Songbook, his tribute to the music of the West Indies. In 2016 at the age of 87 he released An Old Man of the Sea, which was a finalist for an ARIA Award in the World Music category.

Mau Power is a Torres Strait independent business owner, artist and Entrepreneur. He developed a passion for entertainment at the very young age of 12 years old. Over a journey he has turned his passion into a career pathway. The result is the first Torres Strait owned Independent distribution label, film production and Media company to operate out of the region.

In the early years of the career he worked effortlessly to create opportunities of getting into the music industry. This saw him build his own "home recording studio" on Horn Island. Since following his passion in 1996 he has produced (7) mix-tapes, featured on (2) compilation, Released a Solo album; Had his music featured on film and television projects and toured Nationally and internationally. 

In film Patrick has produced documentaries and music videos for broadcasting networks like NITV/SBS, ABC and online platforms. Patrick also has produced a range of promotional and corporate films for health and educational organisations through his production company.

Patrick stepped into the role as a producer in 2012 through the NITV “Our Stories” RRE initiatives for emerging film makers, since then he has gained experience though participating in various projects and attachments. In 2015 he was selected as one of the emerging indigenous film producers to be a part of the Screen Australia Indigenous Producers Initiative (IPI).
