We are excited to share the online premiere of La Retreta Mayor's big jazz funk sound on "Liquido Elemento". Taken from the forthcoming compilation 'Color De Trópico Vol II' on El Palmas.

In 1976 La Retreta Mayor released their only album. Self-titled, it remains a  touchstone for Venezuelan funky jazz. The band was founded and led by musician and composer, Alex Rodriguez, who would follow this album two years later with the now much sought after, "Busqueda". 

'Color De Trópico Vol II' follows on from the first volume on El Palmas. Music from the golden age of Venezuela's music recording industry in the 60s and 70s. From the llanera folk music of Anselmo y su Conjunto through to Orquesta La Playa's grandiose Afro roots big band sound and Mario y Sus Diamantes's quirky organ-led cumbia.

From under-the-radar covers of Desmond Decker and Fela Kuti to the holy grail psychedelic jazz of Almendra, this compilation serves as further proof of the rich musical wealth and diversity that Venezuela could produce.  

Lovingly compiled by El Drágon Criollo, of Contento and Acid Coco, and El Palmas boss, Maurice Aymard, and remastered and cut by the ever-reliable Frank Merritt at The Carvery. 'Color De Trópico Vol II' is released on May 14 on vinyl and all digital channels.  The previous volume sold out fast so don't sleep on this one.

A Brief History Of Venezuela's Musical Boom - Mixed By El Dragón Criollo and El Palmas

'Home' is the new single from Maurice Aymard and Gui Boratto, and is the first release to be taken from  Aymard's forthcoming debut album 'Between Stars'. An inspired collaboration between two of South 
America's leading electronic music producers, 'Home' is the perfect introduction to one of the most  sophisticated yet vibrant underground house albums of 2013. 
 
Released on Aymard's own Galaktika Records (Garnica, James Teej & more), 'Home' was recorded  during a flying visit to Barcelona by the Boratto, the Brazilian producer taxiing straight from the airport to 
Aymard's studio for an intense 24-hour session. The result is a dreamy slice of laid back, late-night  house music that floats along on a bed of languidly funky bass, soft pads and smoky keys. 
 
"I've known and been a huge fan of Gui for several years now. He released an EP on Galaktika way  back in 2007 and remixed my own track, 'Put Some For Jules' in 2010, so when I was recording this 
album I knew I had to get him on it somehow. 
 
Luckily despite his crazy schedule we managed to get him to Barcelona We didn't have much time, but  got straight to work in the studio and well... It's Gui, everything he touches is magic!"  – Maurice Aymard 
 
For the single release Aymard has also called upon the Berlin based British producer Jay Shepheard to  remix the track and the result is a stunning deep house workout from the man, whose own debut album 
'Home & Garden' was released to critical acclaim earlier this year. 
 
Since moving from Venezuela to Spain and launching Galaktika Records, Aymard has become an  integral part of the European house music scene. With releases on the likes of Berlinʼs Moodmusic,  Hamburgʼs Einmusika and Denmarkʼs Tic Tac Toe Records, and remix credits for artists such as Mario  Basanov, Compuphonic and Combo, Aymard has built a reputation for delivering quality underground 
house music that has seen him booked to play clubs around the world, from Tokyo to Berlin, Brazil to  Russia. 
 
More than two years in the making, 'Between Stars', Aymard's debut artist album has been a labour of  love for the Venezuelan. Recorded almost entirely live, Aymard travelled the world to collaborate with 
musicians and singers in Barcelona, Berlin, London and Venezuela who could help to bring his vision to  life.

Maurice Aymard & Gui Boratto -Home (Jay Shepheard Remix)

MIMS is excited to share a fantastic slice of cosmic disco from the late Venezuelan musical legend, Daniel Grau. 

Multi-instrumentalist, recording engineer, producer, composter and arranger, born in Caracas in 1948,  Grau created a unique fusion of styles, from pop-rock, jazz and instrumental folk to funk and disco, that continues to evolve throughout his entire career.

His work drew comparisons to more widely known contemporaries, as he was regarded as "the Venezuelan Giorgio Moroder", and his influence attracted a new generation of collaborators, associated with electronic music, including Gerd Janson, Psychemagik, Ray Mang, and Soul Patrol. 

Future jazz heroes, Jazzanova, compiled and released a compilation of pivotal 70s work, and Barcelona-based El Palmas compiled much of his later work which retained his relevance. 

According to El Palmas, "The loss of maestro Daniel Grau has left us a void that is difficult to describe in words. He himself planned to continue publishing his work and we do so, his wise irreverence and his music continues and will continue to urge us to live the here and now as he did."
