It Is Me

A tribute to the tradition of the Chanson Courtoise, especially in its late polyphonic mode of the High Middle Ages--the French lyric Grand Chant devised by the nomadic trouveres who traveled from court to court plying their trade. The focus is on contrapuntal movements of ascension and descent in both the vocal and instrumental lines. The use of monophonic perfect unisons lends strength to the linearity of the melodies that cut through the harmonic chords and arpeggiated patterns. The tonic of the piece changes from minor to major and back again, as is typical of mediaeval type lyrics and madrigals. Clustered sonorities and a dropped a-string in the treble register open possibilities of mood-painting and tone-poetics between words and music. (Picture: Arthurian scene by N. C. Wyeth)
