Intergalactic house and techno amongst other deeper shades of electronica is Kepler’s forte. The man from Leeds has made rolling basslines, spacey stabs and punchy drums his calling card and these trademark moves can be found on the likes of Pleasure Zone, Sukhumvit Records and Constant Sound. 

As well as his own brand of music he of course commands the good ship Perspective and we have just premiered Tip Top’s ‘The Animator’. Kepler is a special talent and no denying, we have supported his productions on several occasions and we thought it was time to support his DJ skills in our InSession series.

For our final mix of 2024, we’re thrilled to present a live recording from this year’s festival.

This set comes from Thoma Bulwer, Danalogue, and Jac Dos,

Captured during their standout live performance on the Lawn stage.

They’ve also taken some time to answer a few questions, giving insight into how this set came together.

How did this collab come about?

Jack:
We are all part of the East London electronic music community and I knew both the guys separately and thought we’d be a good combo for some nutty jams. In late 2023 Thoma put on a live jam event where the 3 of us did an entirely improv set for 4 hours for the first time ever. We had a ball and it was received so well that we decided we should probably do it again, so hit up Tom  and sent him some clips and he was immediately up for it. Shout out to Tom!

Dan: Jack hit me up for Gottwood, introducing me to Thoma, I think they had a pretty solid idea about what they were doing but needed a wild card / chaos jackal - I felt I could do that role.

Thoma:
At the end of 2023 I put on a Parasol Culture live set event at the Boat Live / Shed in Hackney Wick (when it was on White post lane) and we all had played together for hours all off the cuff and it was so well received that we knew we had to do it again and bring that natural energy back. The live set was a combo of samplers, drum machines like the OG TR-909, Perkons, MPC and Dan’s Roland keyboard playing wizardry all mixed together… on the trusty SSL BiG Six mixer with five G series compressors(!) which paved the way to create varied styles of electronic music, all live init.


Was there a preconception for what the set was going to be or was it all off the cuff?

Jack:
A bit of both. We had a load of different parts from released and unreleased music on samplers and drum machines, but also intentionally left loads of space in the set for improv wigging out, which is usually the most fun part. A huge part of the ethos behind the set was to try and represent the chaos and magic that can happen in studio jams, but live in front of a crowd. We also multi-track recorded the whole set and are working on turning some of the jams into tracks.

Dan: For me was deffo off the cuff, I’d recently got back from a fairly relentless ten month tour with my band The Comet is Coming, so just dropped into the rehearsal and added a couple of my tunes as well as supporting the lads’ tunes.

Thoma:
A blend of both all round. We used samplers to roll out mastered stems from released and unreleased material from albums and EPs of mine and Jack’s. Then in rehearsals with Dan we worked up keys and progression for him to play and left space in the programming to jam live all together, impromptu to keep the natural energy of our first jam all together. Approaching it like a journey throughout the set with space live improv moments allowed us to push, pull, give restraint and build up to boot off moments.


Lastly, What’s your favourite thing about Gottwood?

Jack:
To me it feels like a massive, very well put together house party, in an incredible spot. The Gottwood crowd are all super sound. I also love how it’s maintained its original ethos and character and not sold itself out to big brands, like so many do. Everyone working there was a lovely bunch too.


Dan: People are proper friendly, gotta say the staff on the day at the festival looked after us really beautifully.

Thoma: 
The location is magical, the stages and programming is on point and the artists are always on their A game for the festival and the ravers know their tracks and love to rave right. Smiles and beaming and the vibe is infectious.
