Next in our Mr Bongo’s Record Club mix series, we are excited to welcome Mexican-French, DJ, radio host and deep digger, Sabor A Mi (Sophie Legay Peñaloza).

With a culturally rich well of lived experience through her Mexican and French roots, Sophie’s borderless approach to DJing sees her join the dots through all manner of genres. Underpinned by a love of Afro-Latin rhythms her sets tell stories that link anything from salsa and cumbia, to Latin house, Dembow and beyond, all with a motive to make you dance. Her Rinse France residency is one to check and with DJ sets across Europe and Latin America including Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival, people have been fast turning onto her talents.

This two hour mix showcases Sophie’s signature style:

“This mix was conceived in two parts, an introspective part where the intention was to transport you into a conscious listening experience, then gradually show a more danceable, groovy atmosphere, showing us the richness of Latin, Afro-descendant and mixed music across its genres and eras. It includes many genres that, in the end, were carried by racialized communities. Some tracks carry profound messages, whether through lyrical or musical composition, this mix is full of little details where I share a part of my soul with you. The songs selected are melodies that have influenced my childhood, and my personal development right up to the present day.

They're all favourites of mine, but if I had to pick just a few..:
- Lucia Gutierrez - Morena: This song is particularly close to my heart, as it denounces the problem of classicism and race facing Mexico, my country of origin.

- Richard Bona - Bilongo: One of the finest examples of fraternity between Africa and Cuba.

- Alain Peters - Rosée su Feuilles Songe: A treasure of Maloya music from Reunion Island, whose origins lie in slavery.

- Natalia Lafourcade - Maria La Curandera : A song composed from a letter written by Mexico's greatest healer, Maria Sabina. It has become the feminist anthem of all Latin America."

No set theme/mood, just a journey thru a bunch of tunes I really do love and hoped people would enjoy; but to quote my girl @livwutang, it was rooted in a love for Black music (this mix cover was taken by her during the set <3). Stitching together threads of dubstep, jazz, house, breaks, garage, hip hop, dub, etc.

At some points this kinda feels more like a beat tape with selector style mixing + no long blends. A lil fusion of tired/nervous/letting the tunes shine

MK closing set @ Sustain-Release Festival [NY, Sept '25]

Our November mix in the First Word mixtape series comes from DJ and selector Poly Ritmo. Known for her rich, free-flowing sets that move through jazz, funk, soul, Latin and global grooves, Poly Ritmo has become a trusted presence on the London scene and beyond — sharing deep musical connections between eras, styles and cultures. Her selections radiate warmth, curiosity and a deep love for soulful rhythm in all its forms.

On the mix, Poly Ritmo says:

"A real mixture of sounds from different places and decades, with a common thread of music from the soul. Many of the records I played here are new additions to my collection, and so it was really fun recording this and having the opportunity to play them. Ending with one of my favourite D’Angelo tracks."

In the run-up to our Mr Bongo x Higo Beat Japan tour with DJ Nature we are shining a light on some of the incredible Japanese DJs we have joining us. 

Yukari BB is a key face in the Kyoto scene. She heads up Jazzy Sport Kyoto and her talents behind the decks / as a producer have seen her sign to the renowned Sounds Familiar roster. In her own words, “most of the tracks in this mix are ones I often play during my DJ sets, so it naturally turned out to be quite a danceable mix from the beginning. I usually mix a wide range of genres in a crossover style, and for this mix I blended in tracks like Nico Gomez’s “Caballo Negro,” which I often play, dedicating it to Mr. Bongo. Since I created this one as an all-vinyl mix, it turned out to be a more organic and eclectic set overall.”

“I got “Carnival At Night” by The Island Musicmakers this summer at Yo Yo Records in London. It’s a Caribbean funk tune with beautiful steel pan harmonies, and although I’ve only played it a few times so far, it’s already become one of my favourite tracks.”

miharu, a rising talent also based in Kyoto. As well as working behind the counter at Face Records, she’s regularly found playing across the city and broadcasting on the likes of Tsubaki fm. Her mix elegantly sweeps through a variety of Japanese sounds moving from celestial into more uptempo, touching on funk, cosmic, hip hop, jazz and beyond with a sprinkling of MPB in there for good measure.
